Jeff’s Pick of the Week

Finally! After almost five years since it was announced, Final Fantasy VII Remake will be in our hands. I cannot wait to dive into Cloud’s story and interact with all of the other characters along the way. I am not a huge fan of the original game and I do not think it aged very well, but I do respect its importance to gaming history. I tried to play the original on Switch last year, but could not get myself to finish it. I only got out of Midgar, which is where this game is going to end. I cannot wait to see the upgraded graphics and what they have included to fill out the story of Cloud, Barret, and Aerith.

Jeff’s Pick of the Week

My pick of the week has to go to Bubble Bobble 4 Friends. I love the original NES version of Bubble Bobble. I cannot wait to hear all of the newly created music that will go along with this game. I am ready to join Bub and Bob (and their 2 new friends) on the Rainbow Islands. It has been too long since a game has been released for this series.

Jeff’s Pick of the Week

This week is difficult to pick. There are not a lot of big family-friendly games coming out. My pick is going to go to Gigantasaurus: The Game. Since we are all spending more time inside currently, this will be the perfect game for your younger kids to play and you can play right alongside them since it allows up to 4-players. This is an especially great game if your child watches the Disney Jr show it is based on.

Jeff’s Pick of the Week

My pick of the week will have to go to Animal Crossing. It has been over seven years since Animal Crossing: New Leaf was released and even longer since Animal Crossing has been able to be played on a home console. I cannot wait to talk to Tom Nook on the island and start my vacation!

Stephen’s Pick of the Week

I could go the easy rout and pick Animal Çrossing: New Horizons, but I want to shine a light on MLB: The Show 20. This is the premiere baseball simulation and could be the only professional Baseball action we see for a while.

Jeff’s pick of the week is Ori and the Will of the Wisps

My pick this week goes to Ori and the Will of the Wisps. I’ve played about half of the first game, Ori and the Blind Forest, and I loved it. If you are looking for a good Metroidvania, take a look!

What is it?

Disney+ is the Walt Disney Company’s newest streaming platform that will have movies and television shows from all of the different brands that Disney owns. This includes Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, Pixar, and of course the Walt Disney Studios. Disney+ will even have movies and shows from their newest acquisition, 21st Century Fox.

How much does it cost?

You can sign up for Disney+ for $6.99 a month or $69.99 a year. There were also deals that you can find if you are Disney Visa Card holder or a D23 member. If you are a Verizon Wireless Unlimited member you can receive a year of Disney+ for free with your membership. You can also bundle Disney+ with Hulu (with ads) and ESPN plus for $12.99 a month.

What devices can I get it on?

Disney+ has been said to be streamed on many major platforms including Roku sticks and televisions, Apple TV, iPhones, iPads, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. At this time, Disney+ has not been announced to work Fire TV Sticks, but Disney has said that they want to bring it to all major streaming devices.

What features are included with Disney+?

Disney+ allows up to 4K digital streaming and every Disney+ account will be able to stream on up to 4 devices at a time with no additional cost. The app will also allow for downloading of titles so that you can watch them without an internet connection.

Now for the most important question…

What will be available on launch day?

Disney+ will launch with over 300 movies and shows available on day one. Included in the bunch are almost all of Disney Animation movies (what happened to Tarzan), Disney television shows including the Disney Afternoon shows from the 80s and 90s, every Pixar movie released up until Cars 3, every Star Wars movie up until Rogue One, and a handful of shows from National Geographic and Marvel.

What are the new shows being released on the app?

Along with Disney’s back catalog of shows and movies dating back to the 1920s and 1930s, Disney also plans to have steady releases of new content as well. Some of the new shows and movies announced that will be released on day 1 include The Mandalorian (Star Wars), a Lady and the Tramp live action remake, The Imagineering Story, and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Disney has announced that their new releases will forego the Netflix model and instead of releasing the whole season at once, they will release each episode separately.

Is this only for kids?

Disney+ can be enjoyed by the whole family. Disney did say that nothing rated R will be available on the service. To watch more adult based shows and movies (like Deadpool), you will have to turn to Hulu. But there are shows that adults can enjoy as well. Most of the National Geographic documentaries are catered towards adults. Also, every episode from the first 30 seasons of The Simpsons will be available. You can also find more adult orientated movies like 3 Men and a Baby and 10 Things I Hate About You on the service.

Ring Fit Adventure is the next accessory and game that Nintendo has released to help gamers become comfortable with fitness. In this game, you are your own avatar trying to defeat the evil body builder Dragaux. The method of beating this bad guy? Your own perseverance and fitness techniques! Along with the main game, you will also receive a leg strap and a ring-con in the box. Both are essential to playing this game. Your left joy-con goes into the leg strap and it measures your leg movements.

The game asks you to squat, get down on the ground and do leg lifts, and even run upstairs and through murky swamps using high knees. While using the leg con, I found that it kept slipping while wearing it over my workout shorts, but if I put it directly on my skin, it would not slip. The right joy-con goes into the ring-con accessory. It is essentially a pilates ring that you can attach a joy-con to. You can squeeze it and pull it to pull off certain actions and attacks in the game. Overall, both the leg strap and ring-con are working together to make your workout complete.

Ring Fit Adventure is the next accessory and game that Nintendo has released to help gamers become comfortable with fitness.

The Good

After using this game for a few days, I can definitely say that my limbs are hurting. That is the sign that the workout regime is doing what they say it’s supposed to do. During the campaign you will face different colored monsters. Each color is based off of a different type of workout. This works out well so that you are not completely focusing on one type of workouts. For instance, I did not care for the yoga stretches, but if I came across a green enemy I did them so that I could get an advantage. Each time you turn on the game, your workout starts with stretching and at the end of each play session you do a cool down stretch. The joy-con on the ring-con can even read your heartbeat by using the IR sensor in the right joy-con. There are also a variety of mini games that you can play. During the campaign you can play them at certain spots in your adventure to earn experience. You can also play them with your friends and family to have a fun time and try to beat each other’s scores. There is also a mode that allows you to get reps in without the television being turned on.

The Bad

The story of Ring Fit Adventure is not captivating at all. It’s your typical the big bad boss stole these important items and now we must go and find them. The main reason you should pick up and play this game is not because of the story. You should play this game to help you become healthier. Also, your avatar is really generic. It would be nice to pick a different body shape with the avatar and to change it as I’ll hopefully be using this game for a while. Just like any exercise routine, if you get out of the habit of using it, these items will start collecting dust like all the Wii Fit Boards around the world.

Is this alright for children?

This is a tough question to answer. My 3-year-old daughter was doing the exercises right next to me, but she did not pick up the ring-con or use the leg strap. I do not think the leg strap would stay on tiny legs very well. The ring-con is also hard to squeeze tightly, which may make it hard for some kids to progress in the story.

Conclusion

Ring Fit Adventure tries to break the mold of fitness games by adding an RPG experience while working out. Just like any fitness game, it will only be worthwhile if you continue to keep up with your exercises. This game is exactly what I need to help me to work out and become healthier. This dad gives it a big thumbs up! Now I’m going to crash out on my couch because my legs hurt too much.
