Nintendo has announced that their 2DS handheld will receive a significant price drop at the end of August. The handheld will be bundled with Mario Kart 7 and will sell for an MSRP of $99.99. This is a $30 drop from its previous price. That is just about a 25% price reduction.

This is an amazing move for Nintendo as it puts the entry point to their 3DS line at $100 dollars just in time for a strong Holiday lineup that will include a Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, Legend of Zelda: Triforce Heroes, and Yo-Kai Watch (which is likely to be a HUGE game with kids).

This price drop as well as its hinge-less form factor make this the perfect handheld for parents who want to give their younger children a handheld  video game console, but don’t want to shell out $200 for an New 3DS XL.

Even better? If it turns out that their children decide that they want more as they get older, then Mom or Dad can get them a 3DS XL and then transfer the Mario Kart 7 over to it.

Will you be purchasing a 2DS for your anyone? (Yourself maybe?) Sound off in the comments!

Nintendo came out with a TON of news today. The biggest announcement of the day was for a new handheld system call the Nintendo 2DS. This is, for all intents and purposes, a stripped down version of the 3DS hardware that is being sold at a budget price of $129.99. The system will launch on 10/12/2013 which is, interestingly enough, the release date for Pokémon X and Pokémon Y.

The there are two main differences between the 2DS and the 3DS. The most significant is that the 2DS does not have the 3D technology that inspired the 3DS’s name. It will, however, still play all of the existing DS and 3DS games. This is a big deal because there are a lot of parents who are concerned about the 3D effect and its potential impact on young and developing eyes. This gives those parents a worry free option for their child.

The other difference is in the actual physical shape of the machine. The 3DS is shaped like a hinged clamshell. The 2DS has no hinge. Both screens reside on one side of a tablet-like device. This has the advantage of protecting the device from hinge breakage (there isn’t one). This does come at the expense of a risk for more frequent damage to the exposed screens.

The lower price point is also welcome. The internet exploded when the announcement was made, but there was universal agreement that a $130 machine being released alongside a Pokemon game is a killer combination that will result in a lot of happy children (and Nintendo executives) this holiday.

What do you think? Are you picking this up for your family?

Nintendo could have played a prank on everyone just like the rest of the internet, but instead, they decided to post a Nintendo Direct video that featured a HUGE assortment of games coming to the WiiU and 3DS consoles. You can see the entire video here. Below is a list of all of the major announcements made during the video.

“The world of amiibo is getting bigger, better and even more interactive, And with existing amiibo support for games like Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart 8 and more, and upcoming support for Splatoon, Yoshi’s Woolly World and Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, amiibo continue to stretch the definition of the toys-to-life category.” – Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing

The video opened with Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS.
Mewtwo will be officially joining the roster of Super Smash Bros.for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS as a downloadable character on April 28. The MewTwo DLC will cost $4.99 for both 3DS and WiiU. However, Club Nintendo members who purchased and registered both versions of the game will receive their free download code for Mewtwo on April 15. (That’s two weeks from now!)

In addition, a character named Lucas who originally appeared in Mother 3 (a game that has only been releaqsed in Japan but is often requested for US release) will also be coming to Super Smash Bros. this June.

There will also be a game update on April 15th. After which Super Smash Bros. players will also be able to purchase more costumes for their Mii fighters, including ones inspired by Mega Man X and Proto Man from Capcom’s Mega Man series.

Starting today, Super Smash Bros. fans can visit a specially designed website. to participate in a “Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot.” Fans can use this ballot to vote for which character they would like to see added to Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U as a playable character. This is an option for fans to suggest their favorite characters. There really aren’t any guarantees, but you never know what will come out of it!

Nintendo has sold more than 2.5 million amiibo since they released last fall, so it stands to reason that they would double down on them. The next waves of Super Smash Bros. amiibo will launch over the next handful of months.

 May 29

  • Charizard
  • PAC-MAN
  • Wario
  • Jigglypuff
  • Greninja
  • Robin
  • Lucina
  • Ness

July

  • Dark Pit
  • Palutena

September

  • Zero Suit Samus
  • Ganondorf
  • Olimar
  • Dr. Mario
  • Bowser Jr.

That isn’t all though! Nintendo also announces a new form of amiibo that will  release this fall! The first set of amiibo cards will be based on Animal Crossing characters and will be compatible with the Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer game. Nintendo announced that an NFC reader/writer peripheral for Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL and Nintendo 2DS would be coming at some point. They have confirmed that this device will be launching on the same day as the new Animal Crossing title.

Nintendo also announced amiibo tap: Nintendo’s Greatest Bits. In it Wii U users can download the free application from the Nintendo eShop and tap any amiibo to unlock game-play highlights from select NES and Super NES games. Each amiibo will have a different game linked to them. So each amiibo you purchase will be a grab bag. There is a lot of potential excitement there!

The 30th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros. is this year. (Don’t you feel old now?) Nintendo will release Mario Maker exclusively for the Wii U console this September It is designed to let players create their own levels and easily share them with the rest of the world. (I know I’m looking forward to creating Mario levels for my children!) The most exciting thing about this game is the toolset being provided to younger players. How many future game designers will credit Mario Maker as the place they cut their teeth?

Splatoon will launch exclusively for Wii U on May 29. They detailed a number of different game modes that should help diversify the experience. Nintendo has never released a multiplayer shooter like this before so it is safe to assume there will be some challenges, but at least Splatoon won’t be a one trick pony!

Inkling Girl, Inkling Boy, and Inkling Squid amiibo figures will be launching the same day. Tapping them to the GamePad lets players receive special missions to unlock weapons and gear.

Mario Kart will finally be getting its second DLC pack on April 23rd. It will include all of the Animal Crossing themed content that was originally promised, but there will be several free updates coming along with it.

First, a 200cc racing class is coming. This mode will be even faster than 150cc and will force players to actually BRAKE (which is weird… I’ve never braked in a Mario Kart game before).

It wasn’t officially mentioned in the presentation itself, but a screenshot showed a Mirror mode as well. Its tough to know exactly what is happening without details, but it likely means that certain tracks will be available for racing backwards. If that is the case then this is basically an entire new game.

Also on April 23rd a free software update will add support for nine more amiibo figures, including Mega Man, Sonic and PAC-MAN. Tapping each of them on the gamepad will give players access to even more themed costumes.

Starting today, classic Nintendo 64 and Nintendo DS games are coming to the Virtual Console on Wii U.

Today’s releases are Yoshi’s Island DS for Nintendo DS and Super Mario 64 for Nintendo 64.

Upcoming Virtual Console releases include WarioWare: Touched! for Nintendo DS on April 9 andDonkey Kong 64 for Nintendo 64 on April 16.

They also spent a fair amount of time talking about Yoshi’s Woolly World. It will launch this fall and will be full of challenges and hidden secrets. The most important announcement about the game is the inclusion of a
“Mellow mode” that will allow players to manually turn on a casual setting that will let them play as a Winged Yoshi.

Nintendo will also be releasing a series of Yoshi amiibo figures that are made of actual yarn. Tapping one of these amiibo to the Wii U GamePad while playing Yoshi’s Woolly World will add a second Yoshi to the game even if it is being played a single player experience, fundamentally changing the game.

The 3DS tripped out of the gate thanks to a poor launch lineup, but those days are long gone. The 3DS XL is easily one of the most popular pieces of technology in our house and there is a near endless supply of games. This is a great purchase. This is especially true if you take frequent car trips.

The 2DS launched this fall and is a less costly option meant for younger kids (I think I want one for myself though!) This is a great way for people who just want to experience some of the games the 3DS family has to offer without paying a higher up front price.

Also, keep in mind that the 3DS  and the 2DS are also backwards compatible with DS games. There are hundreds of games that can be purchased on the cheap that are just as entertaining as the more modern games. Make sure to check those out too!

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

This is a big year for Zelda games. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is as close to a true sequel that Nintendo will ever have in the franchise. Its predecessor, A Link to the Past, is one of the most loved games in Nintendo’s history and A Link Between Worlds looks like it improves on every aspect.

If you remember trying to rescue Zelda when you were a kid and long for the chance to introduce your own kids to the series this is an amazing start.

Pokémon X/Pokémon Y – E

Pokemon has been so big for so long that it is never going away. (No matter how much you might want it to!) Pokemon X and Pokemon Y are the first Pokemon games to be developed with the 3DS in mind. The most important

Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon – E

Luigi’s Mansion was a surprise hit on the GameCube. It took a long time for the follow-up, but this is a great game for fans of the original game.

Players control Luigi as he searches a haunted mansion and traps ghosts in his special vacuum. Each room is a puzzle where you have to figure out how to get the ghosts to appear so you can capture them. Don’t let the “ghosts” fool you though, this game is spooky like an episode of Scooby Doo.

Super Mario 3D Land – E

I have yet to play a 3D Super Mario game that I didn’t like. Super Mario 3D Land is no exception. I’ll make this one fast… if you and your family like Super Mario Brothers games, then this is a must buy.

Mario Kart 7 – E

Mario Kart games have continuously reinvented the cart racing genre and with Mario Kart 8 on the horizon for the WiiU this is all but required for Nintendo fans. The addition of both underwater zones and a hang glider add new dimensions to the gameplay. This is a great gift if your family loves Mario, but it looking for something different.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 – E

New Super Mario Brothers 2 is another excellent addition to the Super Mario catalog. This time the game is built around of finding coins… lots of coins.

Sonic Lost World – E 10+

Sonic Lost World is a great way to introduce your children to one of the most recognizable game mascots of the past. A lot of his recent games have been terrible, but this entry is an excellent experience filled with all the high speed platforming that was a mainstay of the franchise in it’s early years.

Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy – E 10+

This may just be personal bias showing, but I can’t help it. This game may not be for every family, but if you and your children have enjoyed any of the Final Fantasy games together, then this is a great way to relive some of those moments. (It doesn’t hurt that it is a bit older and can be yours for less than $20.)

Nintendo released a lot of information regarding the upcoming holiday season today. The biggest announcement was the impending release of the Nintendo 2DS which I discussed here. But, that was not the only announcement that came from the Nintendo camp today.

Nintendo also announced a $50 price cut on the deluxe edition of the WiiU console. That leaves the console at a price point of $299.99. I think this is a great move. The PS4 is only $399.99 and it was well worth the $50 upgrade to get that kind of hardware improvement over the WiiU. The $100 gap is more significant.

Nintendo also announced that they would be releasing a Legend of Zelda:Windwaker HD bundle on 09/20/2013 that would retail for $299.99 and include a digital copy of Hyrule Hystoria and a download code for Legend of Zelda: Windwaker HD at no additional charge. This is a phenomenal deal!

Other announcements include the release dates of several Nintendo titles:

WiiU –

The Legend of Zelda Windwaker HD ($49.99) – 09/20/2013 (digital) and 10/04/2013 (retail)

Wii Party U, bundled with Wii Remote Plus and stand ($49.99) – 10/25/2013

Super Mario 3D World ($59.99) – 11/22/2013

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze ($49.99) – 12/06/2013

Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games – Launches this holiday, further details to be revealed soon.

WiiFit U – Launches this holiday, further details will be revealed soon

3DS –

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds ($39.99) – 11/22/2013

Mario Party: Island Tour ($39.99) – 11/22/2013

The Nintendo 3DS family of systems has been a boon to families for years. They are sturdy, compact handheld gaming systems with a huge library of cool games. Unfortunately, the way that Nintendo handled the naming, and the branding of the console as they have iterated on it over the years has created a very confusing environment for parents. Below is a low-down on the available systems in the family and our recommendations regarding them.

“New” Nintendo 3DS XL

This is a redesign of the Nintendo 3DS XL hardware with a more powerful processor in it. This allows it to play a handful of “New” 3DS only games (like Minecraft). This is a great handheld for families that want to use the #D function in the games that include it.

Most of the special edition 3DS consoles that are released at this point are this model. So, if you buy one of those, then this is what you are getting.

“New” Nintendo 3DS

This is a smaller edition of the “New” 3DS. They have the improved internal tech that is built into the XL, but in a smaller package. The biggest difference between the two systems (aside from size) is that the standard addition uses

“New” Nintendo 2DS XL

This is the newest iteration of the console. It has the same screen size as the 3DS XL models, but it eschews the 3D feature much like the standard 2DS models.

Some might consider that to be a downside, but it really doesn’t make much of a difference. Most 3DS games made at this point don’t really use the 3D features on the handheld at all, and even when they do the feature is not required for gameplay.

Nintendo 3DS

This was the original release of the handheld and is nearly impossible to find. I would not recommend getting this version of the console unless it is being handed down from someone you trust. It has likely been around since around the console’s launch and might have some damage.

With that said if the handheld you are being offered is in good condition it will still work. I just recommend being cautious.

Nintendo 3DS XL

This is the original large model of the 3DS. These are still available, and are relatively inexpensive, but I find it hard to recommend this model. Its underpowered compared to its cost. If you are looking for a 3DS option that will be gentler on your wallet, then I would recommend the “New” Nintendo 2DS XL instead.

Nintendo 2DS

The Nintendo 2DS was a brilliant redesign on Nintendo’s part. They removed the standard clamshell design in favor of a flat device that looks like a cross between a tablet and a Game Boy. Removing the hinge did away

with one of the console’s biggest weaknesses as they are relatively fragile. It did some with a downside though.

The clamshell design protected the consoles dual screens from scratches.

Another significant difference is the removal of the 3D features. This is important for some parents who have concerns about their young children’s vision. It also helps Nintendo reduce the cost of the system.

This was my favorite iteration of the handheld for a very long time until the “New” Nintendo 3DS XL was released. I love the button placement and the durability. It is still readily available in a bundle that includes Mario Kart 7.

A PSA About Special Editions

There are a whole bunch of Special Editions available built for different 3DS games. They are beautiful machines, but it is important to note that they don’t include a copy of the game.

I combed the web for some of the best deals in family gaming. Below is a list of deals available on Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday, and the weekend beyond at several major retailers.

R” Super Buy Video games: Buy 1 Get 1 for $1

  • There are tons of games to choose from. But, a lot of them are bargain bin games for a reason. If the game isn’t on your child’s list do yourself a favor and look it up on Metacritic.com on your smart phone while you are waiting in line and make sure it isn’t rated too horribly.

  • This is a great deal for people who own a PS3, a PSVita, a PS4 or any combination of those three. The free games every month are worth FAR more than the $50 that is usually charged.
  • Families with younger kids might not get to take full advantage of this deal, but families with older children or parents who play games should get a TON of value out of this purchase.

Our kid reviews are back! This time we have a review for Pokémon Y from Seamus!

This review is all about Pokémon Y. It is one of the Kalos region games as opposed to the more recent Sun and Moon. I am here to drop-kick back to X&Y.

Pokémon Y is the partner to Pokémon X, while being partners it’s surprising how they compare. But they are similar enough that you can get the same tech specs for X so don’t worry if you bought it and are reading this. The only real differences are the Legendary Pokémon and certain mega evolutions. Both Charizard and Mewtwo mega-evolve differently cross game. But, mega stones can be traded from game to game so you can easily get the opposite mega in your game. The legendary is the real determining factor. But again you can trade (but who on earth would trade their legendary even for another legendary? You probably picked the game because you like the legendary better). But that’s just me talking on and on. (I went with Y because my awesome uncle gave it to me as a gift. I had no choice in the matter but Y is cooler in my opinion and surprises are great so thank you so much uncle Pete!) I just love Yvetal.

I played this on a 3Ds and I feel that Nintendo didn’t take advantage of the 3D factor as much as they could have. If you only had a 2Ds you wouldn’t be missing much at all. They only put it in on battles which is only half of the game. The story makes up for that though going far from just battle gyms as you spend good amounts of time battling team flare. I won’t give much away on that but they are an evil organization you must stop. You also get to travel with four other trainers two of which are you next door neighbors. They are Shauna, Serana, Tierno, and Trevor.

This game is a wonderful play with plot twists, puzzles, action, and awesome exploration. Everything a game needs!

Exciting things happen in the world of video games every single day. Everything happens so quickly that it can be tough for a parent to keep track of. Between work, carting the kids to everywhere under the sun, cooking, cleaning, and maybe (just maybe) getting a chance to sleep for a few hours parents just don’t have the time to keep up with everything happening in their child’s hobby.

If the above paragraph describes you, then we have an answer for you. Every Friday morning EFG will be publishing a digest of some of the biggest video game news that your family needs to know. So kick back with your morning coffee and enjoy!

Ratchet and Clank Movie Trailer

A movie based on the beloved video game franchise will come out next Spring. A new trailer was just released!

Pikachu will be available at Build-a-Bear

A partnership between Build-a-Bear workshops and the Pokemon company has been announced and it is going to result in a LOT of excited kids this spring.

They will be able to build their own Pikachu stuffed toy at Build-a-Bear locations nationwide and dress them up with Pokemon themed costuming like a Pokeball hoodie and a Charizard costume.

Yo-Kai Watch 2DS Bundle Announced

YO-KAI_Watch-Logo

Nintendo has announced a new 2DS bundle being released this holiday. It will come with YO-KAI Watch pre-installed and will retail for $99.

Many people have derided the 2DS since it was released, but we have been strong proponents of the device. It is all but custom built for younger children since it does not include a clamshell hinge. This makes it far more sturdy for younger hands.

With all that said, YO-KAI Watch is a roleplaying game so it might not be the best pack-in title for that audience, but this is an incredible value for anyone who is looking for a machine to help them play it.
