Square Enix announced today that their 3DS title Final Fantasy Explorers will be released in North America on January 26, 2016.
Final Fantasy Explorers is an action-oriented role playing game where players explore diverse dungeons to collect crystals and do battle with iconic Final Fantasy monsters. Explorers will be able to adventure solo or with up to three other players as they use of to twenty different classes.
Take a look at the trailer below to see what the game will look like and some interesting gameplay details.
As you see, there is a lot to unpack from that minute and a half long trailer. There were three features about the game that really have me and my family excited.
Monster collection
We all know that kids love games where they catch monsters and train them. Final fantasy Explorers looks like it will give players the chance to do just that only with Final Fantasy monsters. This doesn’t necessarily have the same brand strength as Pokemon (what does?), but a game doesn’t need to sell like Pokemon to be successful, this could also be a great way to introduce new players to the Final Fantasy universe and get them hooked just in time for Final Fantasy 15.
Classic Characters
We don’t know how it will work, but the ability to transform into classic Final Fantasy characters should be an interesting mechanic. This is especially true for people who have play Final Fantasy games for a long time. We’re coming up on the release of Final Fantasy 15 so there are literally dozens of characters for them to choose from so we can hope that there will be something for everyone to enjoy.
Eidolon Battles
Final Fantasy Explorers is definitely giving me a Monster Hunter vibe. It looks like a lot of the combat will be focused around massive battles with classic summoned monsters from older games in the series. The only question will be how MUCH of the game will revolve around those fights. We’ll have to find out as we get closer.
