The first twelve amiibo interactive figures from Nintendo have become available for pre-order at just $12.99 each. These are beautifully made figures that are worth the prize of admission to collectors alone, but the promise of interactivity with Nintendo games moving forward is a huge bonus.
The first dozen characters available for pre-order at select retailers are as follows:
- Mario
- Peach
- Link
- Samus
- Yoshi
- Donkey Kong
- Pikachu
- Kirby
- Fox
- Marth
- Villager
- Wii Fit Trainer
Super Smash Bros. for WiiU will be the first game to include fully integrated ammibo functions. But, many more are on the way including Mario Kart 8, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Mario Party 10, and Yoshi’s Woolly World. We have no idea how they will work, but I am willing to bet that we will have an announcement soon to help build excitement for Smash Brothers.
$12.99 puts the amiibo figures in a sweet spot between Skylanders and Disney Infinity figures. We wont be able to justify the price until we see exactly what they will be used for, but amiibo do have one significant advantage over the competition. Skylanders figures are used for exactly one game franchise. Amiibo figures will have some level of use in just about every Nintendo game moving forward. We’ve never been able to buy a figure and have it augment an entire library of games. It will be interesting to see how the market handles that.
All in game utility aside, amiibo figures are a collector’s dream. I would expect that these will come off the shelf quickly so parents who are interested in buying them should grab their children’s favorite characters when they can.
