Sony confirmed the release date for long-awaited game, from Studio Japan, The Last Guardian. The game will be released on October 25, 2016 exclusively for the PS4.

There are few games that have held fans breathless waiting for their release quite like The Last Guardian. Fans fell in love with Team ICO’s previous games (ICO and Shadows of the Colossus) and have been eagerly awaiting the release of the Last Guardian for a decade. The game was originally announced as part of the opening salvo for the Playstation 3, but development issues, staff turnover, and who knows what else kept the game from being released on the console in a timely manner. Eventually it was decided to move the game over to the PlayStation 4.

The story is fascinating and I would give anything to be able to see what was happening in the studio through the development cycle, but I have a feeling that it is a mystery that will be locked away forever.

The Last Guardian is an action platforming game where players take on the role of a little boy who is befriended by a strange creature that looks somewhat like a cross between a bird, a dog, and a goat. The trailer suggests that the key component in the story of the game is the relationship between the boy and his friend as they explore a strange set of ruins.

The PlayStation Experience took place on December 5th and 6th. They made a significant number of announcements as part of their keynote address on December 5th. Below is a list of the announcements that are the most relevant for families. You can see the FULL slate of announcements including all the M rated titles here.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

The Final Fantasy VII Remake was announced at E3 back in June to thunderous applause. It immediately became one of the most anticipated games on a lot of people’s lists. This trailer showing the updated graphics and combat system didn’t exactly hurt. Take a look below.

Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch was a surprise hit for the PlayStation 3 so it was only a matter of time before a sequel was announced. That said, it was a bit of a surprise to see the trailer so prominently featured during their keynote.

It looks gorgeous just like one would expect it to, but it didn’t really tell us much about the game. There is plenty of time for that though. Lets just enjoy the trailer shall we?

Ratchet and Clank – Gameplay Demo

A Ratchet and Clank movie is coming out in 2016. Sony is releasing a remake of the original Ratchet and Clank game to coincide with that release. Below is an onstage demo of the game being played during the keynote. It shows off a number of the interesting weapons and highlights the improved graphical power of the PS4.

We can’t wait to play it.

MLB: The Show 2016

We knew this was coming, but it was stunning to watch. The Show is an amazing baseball experience and this looks like it will be no different.

Exciting things happen in the world of video games every single day. Everything happens so quickly that it can be tough for a parent to keep track of. Between work, carting the kids to everywhere under the sun, cooking, cleaning, and maybe (just maybe) getting a chance to sleep for a few hours parents just don’t have the time to keep up with everything happening in their child’s hobby.

If the above paragraph describes you, then we have an answer for you. Every Friday morning EFG will be publishing a digest of some of the biggest video game news that your family needs to know. So kick back with your morning coffee and enjoy!

Sony held a press event at the beginning Paris Games Week that took place from … they made a handful of announcements there that are relevant to families.

They were:

Street Fighter V Roster Complete and Release Date Announced

Street Fighter V has been a big topic of conversation amongst the EFG staff. It is, easily, one of my most anticipated games for 2016.

They announced the final entry to the 16 fighter roster: Dhalsim. He hails from India and has been a regular part of the roster for the vast majority of the games in the series.

They also announced that it will release exclusively for the PlayStation 4 on February 16, 2016.

Sony Announces Boundless

There were almost no details given but they showed a gorgeous trailer for a game called Boundless.

Take a look below.

More Horizon: Zero Dawn Gameplay Revealed

We don’t KNOW that this game will be rates under M yet. So until then I’m going to keep showing the trailers because this game looks awesome.

No Man’s Sky is Coming June of 2016

We still don’t know the exact date yet, but Sony and Hello Games announced a release window for the much anticipated No Man’s Sky. They also released a gameplay trailer that started to give us a little bit more context as to why players will be exploring this vast universe.

Nintendo Announces first mobile game: Miitomo

Nintendo held an investor’s meeting this past week where they FINALLY announced their first mobile game. Fans who have been looking to play a Mario game on their iPhone will have to wait though.

The first game that they are releasing will come in early 2016 and will be called Miitomo. The announcement was light on details (sensing a theme this week?) but it appears that the game will be, essentially, a Nintendo themed social network with game like elements. It will give mobile games a chance to connect with the people around them to play games and to interact in interesting ways. Picture a super-charged version of the 3DS street pass functionality.

We’ll talk more about it as the release gets closer and we have more details.

Pokemon is coming to McDonalds after Thanksgiving!

The Pokemon Company and McDonalds are teaming up from November 27th to December 23rd. Kids will be able to get one of eight Pokémon figures including Pikachu, Primal Groudon, Primal Kyogre, Lugia, Rayquaza, Mega Latios, Wobbuffet, and Hoopa.

We’re all going to buying a lot of happy meals this holiday season.

PlayStation 4 Price Drop!

Sony Playstation 4 to release on November 15, 2013!

Sony announced a price drop on the PlayStation 4 in Japan a while back, so it was safe to assume that the price drop would be applied in the North America region at some point. But, we didn’t have confirmation until October 8th when Sony confirmed it all. Moving forward the PlayStation 4 will be $349.99 (a $50 price drop).

This is a significant announcement for them as the price of the PS4 has been stable since its launch. This does look like it will help the console compete with the Xbox One this holiday season.

Several Xbox One Bundles Announced for the Holiday

The logo for the Xbox One, Microsoft's next generation console

Microsoft spent last week announcing a new Xbox One bundle every day. Several of them included games like Fallout 4 and Gears of War which aren’t family friendly. But, there are a few that are perfect for families.

The bundles announced each day last week were:

Monday: Xbox One 1TB Rise of the Tomb Raider Bundle

Tuesday: Xbox One 1TB Holiday Bundle including Gears of War, Rare Replay and Ori and the Blind Forest

Wednesday: Xbox One 500GB The LEGO Movie Videogame Bundle

Thursday: Xbox One Special Edition White Gears of War Bundle and Xbox One With Kinect Bundle

Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddess will air on The Late Show next week!

Mighty No. 9 gets a new release date

Mighty No 9 logo

Mighty No. 9 will be released on Feb. 9, 2016 in North America according to an announcement by Deep Silver (the game’s publisher). It was a huge Kickstarter success, but the momentum has dulled in recent months as the development as sputtered.

Mighty No. 9 will be available both digital and on disc for PlayStation 4, Wii U and Xbox One. It will be released digitally on the same day for Linux, Mac, PlayStation 3, Windows PC and Xbox 360.

I can’t wait to play this game, but I am sad to admit I am not very optimistic that it will be released on this newly announced date either. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Nintendo 3DS selects announced in UK

Nintendo UK announced a set of 3DS games being reprinted and discounted called the 3DS selects. Historically, games in this lineup (for the Wii and Wii U) have been sold at a reduced price.

The games listed in the announcement are: The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Star Fox 64 3D, Nintendogs +Cats, Mario Tennis Open, Yoshi’s New Island, and Mario Party Island Tour.

We don’t know if this program will continue in the US, but it is very possible as we approach the Holiday season.

Project Spark for Xbox One goes completely free on Oct 5!

Project Spark

Microsoft has announced that Project Spark, the free-to-start game creation program will be transitioning to fully free starting on October 5th. The means that DLC that was previously behind a paywall will be available to everyone.

The update includes HUGE boosts in the maximum terrain and maximum prop limit, more than 200 new assets, as well as an increase to 100 total upload slots for each creator.

Anyone who spent money on the game before it transitions to free will release a credit on their account between thirty to sixty days from October 5th.

Project Spark is a very robust game creation program that presents its users with a change to make some pretty in depth experiences. If anyone in  your family is interested in game design then this is worth a look. Just be ready for a steep learning curve.

Mario Tennis Ultra Smash Gets a Release Date!

Mario Tennis Ultra Smash will serve up another set of Mario Tennis action on November 20. It supports up to four players and will retail for $49.99.   We don’t know much else about the gameplay but here’s hoping it’s an ace!

  Super Mario Maker sales figures

It was revealed this week that more than 1 million units of Super Mario Maker have been sold around the world since its launch on Sept. 11. Below is a list of the biggest family video game news stories of the past week!

Star Fox Zero Delayed

Miyamoto-san made the follow very candid post on Facebook last week to announce the delay of Star Fox Zero into the first quarter of 2016.

“I made a big decision last week.

We have been developing Star Fox Zero for Wii U with the aim of releasing it this year. Although we felt that the development had been progressing well, we now believe that we will need a little more time to work on areas such as the unprecedented discovery that we want players to experience in the game by using two screens, and further polishing the level designs and perfecting the tone of the cut scenes. While we have already reached the stage where it would be technically possible to release the title in time for the year-end holiday season, we want to polish the game a bit more so that players will be able to more smoothly grasp the new style of play that we are proposing.

To the people looking forward to the launch of the game this holiday season, I am very sorry.

Star Fox Zero is going to bring new game play and experiences that take it far beyond the framework established by Star Fox 64. All the members of the development team are doing our best so that the final product will not betray your expectations. And the game will not be delayed for a very long time – we’re aiming to launch the game in Q1 2016. Please stay tuned for further announcements.”

Star Wars Battlefront Beta Announced

Electronic Arts has announced that the beta for Star Wars Battlefront will take place from Oct 8th through the 12th.

The game is mostly done, but this will provide EA with useful data about their servers to help make the launch as smooth as possible. It will also have the advantage of serving as a demo for interested players to help them make up their mind.

The beta will not feature the entire game, of course, but fill include several of the more important game modes. The download will be around seven gigs so you will want to take that into account when making your plans to play the game.

We will be playing the beta so you can keep your eye here for more information and our impressions!

Minecraft confirmed for Oculus Rift

This year’s Oculus Connect conference for virtual reality developers started with a bang. Mojang confirmed via a brief video that the Windows 10 edition of Minecraft will launch on the Oculus Rift “next year.”

The Toys to Life Hat trick is Now Complete!

The toys to life category of toys has been huge in recent years. This year will be no exception as we will have three different games competing for our attention. Disney Infinity 3.0 launched on August 30th. Skylanders Superchargers launched last Sunday. And, LEGO Dimensions releases this Sunday.

We’ll be publishing a comparison article this week. So keep your eyes on Engaged Family Gaming!

Turner Networks Enter eSports Business

Turner Broadcasting System and WME/IMG are coming together to start a new eSports league. This on its own wouldn’t be that interesting except for the fact that they will be televising the tournaments on Turner networks.
The league will launch next year on TBS and each tournament will last 20 weeks. The first game they will be playing is Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

This may not be a tournament for families considering the game is a squad based shooter, but the proliferation of eSports is certainly relevant.

Angry Birds The Movie Trailer Released

E3 2015 is over and it showcased a LOT of games that parents will be able to enjoy with their kids. But, some of the best games shown were just not appropriate for kids.We call those “grown up games” in our house because they are still games, but they just aren’t quite right for the younger set.

Below are our favorite Grown Up Games from E3 2015.

Fallout 4

This is, for many people, the crown jewel of gaming from this year’s E3. Bethesda is known for creating immersive worlds that give players the freedom to do whatever they want and this will be their first dance with the new generation of hardware.

The game will take place in Boston 100 years after the world is destroyed by nuclear war. You play a man, or woman, who survived the destruction in some sort of cryo-stasis in an underground vault and emerge into a largely desolate world that is teeming with bandits, mutants, and robots.

The game world looks massive from the trailer Bethesda presented us with and I, for one, cannot wait to run around in it!

Dishonored 2

The original Dishonored caught most of the gaming world by surprise in 2012. It was a brilliant game that presented players with a world to explore and tasks to complete in whichever way they chose. Most notably, players were able to sneak through the game non-violently or run roughshod through the Victorian setting laying waste to all who stood in their way.

It was a lot of fun to play and the world building was amazing. The developers put a huge amount of work into every little detail to make sure that the games world was as impressive as the gameplay.

Even better? The sequel features a female protagonist that has a completely different arsenal of weapons and magic talents from Corvo (the main character in the original). Both of these characters are playable in the sequel as well.

Uncharted 4

The Uncharted series has been a wild since it first debuted on the PlayStation 3 early in its life cycle. The story, and the action, have escalated significantly over the years and have made it one of the most love franchises in games today.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is intended to be the last chapter in Nathan Drake’s story and if the gameplay demos they have shown so far are any indication we should be in for a wild ride!

Horizon: Zero Dawn

Guerilla Games is known for their work on the Killzone franchise. They debuted a new game at E3 this year that looks like a huge departure from their previous work.

Killzone has always been a bleak, industrial shooter. Horizon: Zero Dawn, however, is an action based roleplaying game that takes place in a beautiful, mostly-natural environment. The game takes place 1000 years after mankind falls and features humankind living in tribal, hunter/gatherer societies. Players control a young girl named Aloy who ventures out into this world.

We know almost nothing about the story, but the game looks great. I can’t wait to play it.

Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate

OK. Here’s the thing. I had fallen out of love with the Assassin’s Creed series after Unity. It was a lackluster game that was plagues with some bugs that kept the game from resonating with me. Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate looks MUCH more interesting and has pulled me right back in after I thought I was done.

This is also the first console edition of Assassin’s Creed to feature a female protagonist which is a pretty big deal considering the mess that was last year’s E3 and the lack of female characters in the largely multiplayer focused Assassin’s Creed: Unity.

There really isn’t much to say here. DOOM is one of the biggest franchises in the history of shooters and it is coming back in all of its over-the-top violent glory. This is definitely a game for when the kiddoes are in bed, but it looks like it will be well worth the wait.

I remember talking with my wife about what I expected to see at the Bethesda press event and treating DOOM like an afterthought. I told her that I wasn’t really all that interested, but that I was excited to see what they were doing for the sake of the fans. That lasted about a minute into the trailer before I was excited to buy it and bring it home.

What about you? What game are you looking forward to playing that you just don’t think you can share with the kids?

The day before the E3 show floor opens is always a big deal for the game industry. That is the day that most of the big publishers hold massive, multi-million dollar press events to show off their offerings for the next several years. It is such an important day that is has even been given a name: “Day Zero.”

Well. Day Zero for E3 2015 has come and gone and it was, by all accounts, one of the most amazing days of announcements in recent history. It was the video game equivalent of the best Christmas morning you could ever remember. Sony made three surprise announcements that brought many gamers, myself included, to tears.

The three surprise announcements all revolved around legendary games and game franchises that represented high water marks in game development and the lives of many of their players.

In short: This was a big deal.

The Last Guardian

First, Sony opened their press conference by re-unveiling The Last Guardian. This is a game that has been in development  for a very long time. So long, in fact, that it was first announced back in 2007. This is important because it is being developed by JapanStudio. This is the team responsible for ICO and Shadow of the Colossus; two of the most critically acclaimed games of all time. Players have been hungry for this game for YEARS and grew more concerned with each passing year with no new information.

Final Fantasy VII

Second, Sony stunned the crowd by announcing an HD remake of the classic Final Fantasy VII. Fans have been clamoring for an HD remake of Final Fantasy VII for years as the game was groundbreaking at release, but has not aged well. Square Enix has long stated that the cost of recreating such a massive game using HD rendered graphics would not be something that they could afford to do. I’m not sure what caused them to get over that particular problem, but here we are!

Shenmue 3

Lastly, they helped launch a Kickstarter for Shenmue 3. This title is relevant because Shenmue and (its sequel) Shenmue 2 were two of the first open world games. They included an deep and personal narrative that players really got invested in. I was never a huge fan personally, but the game’s fans are devoted enough to have kept the demand alive for a very long time. (In fact, the Kickstarter launched during Sony’s press conference and raised $2 million dollars within five hours. THAT is a devoted fan base.)
