Wii U

Nintendo went live on YouTube Live @ E3 on Monday to announce a list of independent games that will be coming to the Wii U and 3DS in the coming months. Here they are.

Jotun Valhalla Edition – Wii U

Jotun was released on PC last year. It is a hand drawn, isometric adventure game where players take on the role of a female viking as she ventures through an abstract landscape and challenging mighty Jotuns to battle.

The game draws significant inspiration from Dark Souls and the other games made by From Software. This inspiration is expressed in the difficulty of the bosses. The Jotuns are punishingly difficult and force you to learn their patterns and practice your execution until you beat them.

Runbow Pocket – New 3DS

Runbow is one of the more popular Nindies in the last few years. It is a simple concept. Runbow is a competitive platformer where players race to a finish line while the background regularly changes color. As the background changes color the multicolored platforms in the foreground disappear when the colors match. This makes each race super chaotic and (in my opinion) fun. Fans have been asking 13AM games for a handheld version of the game since its release. Those wishes are finally being answered. Later this summer Runbow Pocket will release on the New 3DS.

Runbow Deluxe & Runbow Pocket Deluxe – Wii U and New 3DS

Runbow will also be receiving a physical edition in the form of Runbow Deluxe and will be in stores later this year.

Axiom Verge – Wii U

Axiom Verge is an exploration based platforming game that was developed by a one man development team. It carries inspirations from classic NES games like Contra and Metroid and has already been a success on PS4 and PC. The release on Wii U will give players some additional tools like a map openly visible on the game pad, which will definitely help make exploring the vast map.

Severed – Wii U and 3DS

Severed is a first-person role-playing game that was made by Drinkbox Studios (the people behind Guacamelee). The combat is largely touch based so using a stylus on the Wii U or 3DS screen fits perfectly here. The game has already been released on PS4 and Vita to modest success so it makes sense that it would be ported elsewhere.

There are few things on earth that are more consistent than the annual release of Just Dance. This year will be no different as we will be playing Just Dance 2017 this October.

The developer’s goal is, and has been, to make the whole world dance, and releasing the ever popular dance title across every platform imaginable certainly helps with that. The game will be released on the following (giant) list of consoles:

  • Xbox 360
  • Xbox One

The other modes include Sweat + Playlists, Just Dance Quest, Just Dance TV, and the World Dance Floor.

The first tracks announced as part of the release are as follows:

  • “Sorry” – Justin Bieber

Mojang and Microsoft made some significant Minecraft announcements during their E3 2016 Press Briefing. Minecraft has already sold over 100 million copies, but neither company is ready to rest on their laurels. Massive updates are coming to all versions of the game to increase the number of ways people can play together, and number of people they can play with.

They opened the Minecraft segment with a demo that showcased  cross-device play between iOS, Android, Samsung Gear VR, and Windows 10 devices. This is being made possible through what they are calling the “Friendly Update” for the Minecraft Windows 10 Edition and the Minecraft: Pocket Edition.

They also announced that they would be launching the Minecraft Realms services that will allow Windows PC and Mobile players to create and host their own multiplayer worlds that they can play in with their friends 24/7 even if they are offline. A one month demo of Minecraft Realms is available to people with Xbox Live accounts starting today.

They also announced that they will be bringing more add-ons and texture packs to allow players to more fully customize their worlds. Even more announcements and surprises are in store for us at Minecon in September.

Nintendo has published some wacky games over its history, but none of them hold a candle to Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE (That’s a SHARP as opposed to a hashtag). This Japanese RPG will release on June 24th and it is being developed by Atlus.

The story of the game is straightforward. “A sinister force from another dimension has invaded modern-day Tokyo” and the player has to control a team of heroes to help drive it back. The turn based combat is fast paced and is intermingled with a crafting system, musical performances, and fan service.

This is definitely not a game for everyone, but the trailer itself was just too crazy not to share. Take a look and let us know your thoughts in the comments!

We have been waiting a VERY long time for Mighty No. 9 to come out. The wildly successful Kickstarter campaign for the game happened almost three years ago. But, it looks like the game will finally come out.

Keiji Inafune, the head of Comcept, made an announcement to Kickstarter backers that was also posted on the Mighty No. 9 website that announced that the game has “gone gold” which means that it should have no further delays and will, finally, release on June 21st, 2016.

Mega Man fans don’t have much longer to wait before they get to play this one as that is less than eight weeks from now. We can only hope that it will be worth the long wait. (Although, let’s be honest with ourselves for a minute here. The internet is not a very forgiving beast. I expect that the game could be perfect and it wouldn’t be enough for some people.”

We will be covering the game and publishing a review after its release so keep your eyes on Engaged Family Gaming for info as the release date comes closer.

Take a look below for the full text of the announcement.

“To all of our backers and fans of Mighty No. 9,

Firstly, I would like to say again how sincerely sorry we are for how long we have kept all of our fans waiting. We are finally able to deliver some long awaited news regarding Mighty No. 9. We have now confirmed the following release dates for Mighty No. 9: June 21st 2016 (North America & Asia) and June 24th 2016 (World Wide). We understand that as a result of the various delays we have disappointed and let down our fans, but we are happy to finally be able to deliver the game to everyone who brought us this far.

With the game having “gone gold” we are in the last final stages of being able to deliver it into your hands, be that via your favorite retail outlet, or via digital channels.

Therefore the release date we are announcing is set in stone and there will be no further delays for the game.

Portable versions for PlayStation® Vita and Nintendo 3DS ™ will follow at a later point.

It has been almost three years since the start of our Kickstarter campaign, which was only made possible through the support of our backers and fans around the world. This is a project where everyone’s passions were combined in order to create something very special, and we are looking forward to delivering the final product to everyone who was involved. There can be no stronger connection between game creators and game fans.

Now that the dust has settled, we will be delivering Mighty No. 9 to everyone next month. How long will it take you to clear the main story on NORMAL? How many people are going to be able to clear MANIAC mode? What is going to be the fastest record for the time attack mode? We are looking forward to seeing the community answer all of these questions for us! Make sure to let us know your feedback and thoughts on the game through our SNS channels as you play the game. Your voices are what made this game possible, and we want to continue hearing what you think so that it may influence our future endeavors. “

Nintendo may as well have set the internet on fire overnight with the news that came out of their quarterly earnings call. They revealed a wealth of information that sowed more than a little bit of chaos onto the web this morning.

I woke up to a press release with all of the news this morning. Take a look below for snippets of the press release as well as my thoughts and feelings.

Miitomo

Nintendo’s first app for smartphones and tablets has already crossed 10 million unique users worldwide. The free-to-start social experience app launched in Japan on March 17 and in a variety of other countries, including the United States, on March 31. In the United States, Miitomo reached #1 free app status in its various online stores shortly after release. Along with these outstanding user numbers, Nintendo also has, to date, sparked more than 300 million conversations in Miitomo. In addition, users can insert their Mii characters into photos to create unique “Miifotos” that can be shared through various social media. As of now, more than 20 million Miifotos have been created. To celebrate Miitomo hitting 10 million users, Nintendo will run a special 10-day “Celebrating 10 Million Users!” promotion April 29-May 8.”

Miitomo has been very successful so far considering that it has already reached 10 million users with less than six weeks on the global marketplace. The fact that it has 300 million conversations started within that same period of time is equally impressive.

The question still remains, however, whether or not there will be any staying power for the app. It could fall off of a cliff completely at some point. The good news for Nintendo is that probably doesn’t matter. It has already been an amazing trojan horse that has helped get a large number of people signed up for My Nintendo accounts and to get their emails into the system so Nintendo can market their other mobile titles to them.

Speaking of which…

Nintendo’s Next Mobile Apps

“Building on the positive consumer reaction to Miitomo, Nintendo announced that its next two mobile apps would be based on the familiar and beloved Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing franchises. Nintendo plans to release both of these applications this fall. As for the former app, while making it more accessible in comparison to the Fire Emblem games for Nintendo’s dedicated gaming systems, Nintendo aims to offer the great value of a role-playing strategy game. Nintendo will design the latter game so that it will be connected with the world of Animal Crossing for dedicated gaming systems. By playing both Animal Crossing games, users will find increased enjoyment. Both of these are pure game applications. Compared to Miitomo, they have more prominent game elements, and the game content will tie closely into Nintendo’s dedicated games business. Nintendo will provide more details about these applications closer to their launch period, and aims to have multiple types of apps that appeal to different audiences and different groups of players.”

The next two Nintendo mobile games will be based on Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing. These are both amazing properties that have a lot of potential as mobile games.

There are already a HUGE number of strategy RPGs on mobile devices as that style of combat is perfect on a touch screen. The press release states that it will be more accessible that previous entries in the franchise, which honestly isn’t all that tough considering the challenge level of the series. Also, there are a number of ways they could go that arent necassarily a strict turn-based strategy game. They could easily create some sort of hero focused tower defense game or a base building game of some kind. Regardless… I can’t wait.

The Animal Crossing app is interesting as well. The press release states that it will be connected in some way to Animal Crossing games on dedicated gaming devices. The question just becomes… how? They could patch some sort of connectivity into New Leaf or Happy Home Designer. But, it could be a sign that a new game might be coming later this year. That could be pretty awesome! Only time will tell.

The Nintendo NX

Nintendo previously announced that it would release more information about its next system, code-named NX, this year. As the first announcement of any NX information, Nintendo confirmed that NX is scheduled to launch in March 2017. NX will not make an appearance at the upcoming E3 video game trade show in Los Angeles in June and will be unveiled later this year.”

I lost myself a bet here. I guaranteed that the NX would come out this year and made two bets with writers on other sites.

… And I lost those bets.

Honestly, though, this is not a bad idea at all. Pushing the NX out until 2017 gets it out of the way of any of the other upgraded consoles being rumored for 2016 and gives Nintendo more time to tighten the launch lineup.

The Legend of Zelda

The latest installment in this classic franchise is scheduled to launch simultaneously for both Wii U and NX, and both versions of the game have been in development in tandem. Because developers need more time to polish the game, it will launch in 2017, but it will be the focus of Nintendo’s presence at E3.”

Delaying the new Legend of Zelda game definitely stung some fans. But, the delay didn’t sting as much as the fact that it will be simultaneously released on both Wii U and the NX.

E3 Plans

Nintendo changes its approach to the show every year. This June, Nintendo will focus its attentions on the upcoming game in The Legend of Zelda franchise. The Wii U version of the game will be playable for the first time on the E3 show floor, and it will be the only playable game Nintendo presents at the show, in order to provide attendees a complete immersion. Additional information about Nintendo’s E3 plans will be announced in the future.”

E3 is coming up very soon and it is easily the noisiest period of the year.  Competition to “win” the event in the eyes of the gaming press and the fans is insane based on the number of games and pieces of hardware shown. Nintendo leaving all of their console news until after the event and leaving The Legend of Zelda to fend for itself is actually a pretty savvy move. People will be so excited to get their hands on the new game that it will definitely garner a lot of attention. They might not need anything else to dominate a lot of headlines and build interest. They can then follow up with a Nintendo Direct a month or two later with a bunch more game announcements and not even have to worry about the E3 noise.

Pokemon battles are nothing new. We’ve been seeing these cute little monsters battle it out for decades now. With that said, these battles have always been very abstracted. I have a difficult time imagining a pair of trained beasts patiently taking turns while they lay into each other with fireballs and water blasts. Instead, I have always imagined the battles to more like MMA bouts where both combatants fight at once; wildly slashing, bashing, and blasting at each other.

My vision was finally realized when Pokken Tournament was announced last year. I was super excited then, and that carried right through until the release of the game. I have been hungry to get in and battle it out for a long time and I can say that I was not disappointed.

First, it is important to note that Pokken Tournament was developed by some of the same people responsible for the long running Tekken series. As a result the fighting mechanics are rock solid. The buttons are responsive and the action is furious. I never felt like I was behaving randomly even when I was learning the game. This is a big deal because the Pokemon brand will certainly attract a younger audience and it is important that the game be accessible right from the outset.

At its core Pokken Tournament is fighting game just like the others that are on the market right now. The biggest thing that sets it apart from the competition is its use of different “phases.” During each match players compete for position in both a Field Phase, where they can freely roam the battlefield, and a Duel Phase, where players fight in close quarters on a 2D plane. Each match is a dance as players weave in and out of the two phases based on their preferences. Some players may prefer to “zone” out their opponents using ranged attacks while others will try to close in on their opponents to unleash devastating combos. This adds an additional layer of strategy without bogging players down with additional button presses.

The roster includes sixteen Pokemon of various elements and from different games in the primary series. Everyone who plays should be able to quickly find a character that they like. And, honestly, if they can’t decide… then they should just use Lucha Libre Pikachu. Trust me.

Family Gaming Assessment

Pokken Tournament joins Super Smash Bros for Wii U as a family friendly option for fans of the fighting game genre. It does involve one on one combat between two Pokemon, but they are all obviously cartoonish characters. If you would let your child watch an episode of Pokemon, then the basic gameplay will not be a problem.

The game does, however, involve online matches where other player’s screen names are visible. Nintendo is generally very good at keeping the really bad stuff from being visible, but it is still worth being vigilant.

Playability Review

Fighting games aren’t exactly known for being “simple.” Pokken Tournament is no different. Players will need to have to be coordinated enough to use just about every button on the controller. In order to be successful they will need to be able to enter complex strings of button presses. This isn’t to say that you can’t just button-mash your way to a good time, but success depends largely on your ability to string together combos.

Conclusion

Pokken Tournament is an excellent game. Pokemon fans and fighting game fans alike should check this one out.

The Nintendo Direct was week ago, but we are still super excited for several of the announcements that Nintendo made during the presentation. Take a look at the full video and then look below for our favorites!

Star Fox Zero – Wii U

I’ve been concerned about Star Fox Zero for a while. It didn’t look very good when it was formally announced and everything I read about the way the game controlled gave me plenty to be scared of. The numerous delays haven’t done anything to help heighten my excitement either. The footage and features they showed this time around have us much more excited. The biggest reason? The introduction of a cooperative mode where one player can control the ship while the other controls the fine aiming with the Wii U gamepad. I simply cannot wait to give this one a try with my kids!

Star Fox Zero will launch on April 22nd.

Paper Mario: Color Splash – Wii U

Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door for the GameCube is one of my favorite RPGs of all time. It is dumb. It is laugh out loud funny and it has some of the smartest turn based combat in the entire series. Paper Mario: Color Splash looks like it has a chance to return the series to form by bringing it back to the home console to take full advantage of the hardware’s power.

We don’t know any of the details regarding release window, but it is safe to assume it will be out during the later part of the year.

Splatoon – Wii U

We thought that updates for Splatoon were over, but Nintendo is coming back swinging! They have already released a balance patch with the intention of improving matchmaking and increasing the weapon diversity by making some of the lesser used weapons better. They also plan to release several different weapon configurations in packs called “Shelldon’s Picks” starting in April!

Kirby: Planet Robobot – 3DS

Kirby Games are always a treat. He’s adorable and his games are often very forgiving for kids who want something to play. This time you control Kirby just like you always have, but with the added twist that you can hop into a giant mechanized suit of armor.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past – 3DS

We are huge RPG fans here at EFG. That won’t come as a surprise to any of our regular readers.

The Dragon Quest series is one that doesn’t get a lot of love in North America and it really doesn’t make much sense. It has interesting characters, cool stories, and tight mechanics. Dragon Quest VII is one of the best in the series and it is getting the full remake treatment for the 3DS. The graphics are being redone and it is being fully localized for the Western audience. It will be coming out later this year.

Reviewed on Wii U

Overall

I have a confession to make. I ran out and bought a Wii and Twilight Princess as     quickly as I could back when the game first came out. I played for about six to seven hours and enjoyed myself (or thought I did at least). But, one day I turned the game off and never turned it back on. There was just something frustrating about the game that I couldn’t put my finger on.

When I heard that Twilight Princess was coming to the Wii U in HD I knew, as a Zelda fan, that I had to give it another shot. And boy… am I glad that I did that. The new version of the game shined a bright spotlight on my previous play through and helped me discover the exact reason I struggled: The waggle controls.

The original version of the game made use of the Wii’s motion controls, but it only worked in a haphazard way. The designers essentially mapped different shakes and thrusts to different buttons. It was a far cry from the sword play I was hoping for.

The HD remake, on the other hand, utilizes the controls that were present on the GameCube version of the game and the experience is glorious. I was immediately more comfortable with playing the game and was able to progress well past my previous quitting point in a matter of hours.

Even better? The simple textures really pop with the new resolution. My kids hardly noticed that the game was almost a decade old. They were genuinely stunned when I told them about it.

Anyone who had reservations about their previous experiences owes it to themselves to give this game another try.

This is a classic Zelda adventure that serves as a great entry point to the series for fans who have never played a game in the series. My two sons are nine and seven and thoroughly enjoyed learning about some of the core themes in Zelda games like temple design and the relationship between Link, Zelda, and Ganon. My oldest has put in a lot of time with Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask so he found it especially interesting to see all of the different threads that connect the different games in the series.

Family Gaming Assessment

Twilight Princess HD is rated T by the ESRB. The ratings summary is as follows:

“This is an action-adventure game in which players assume the role of Link, a young hero who must save a fantasy kingdom by defeating an evil villain. From a third-person perspective, players explore caves/dungeons, solve puzzles, and use swords, arrows, bombs, and magic to defeat enemy creatures (e.g., skeletons, spiders, dragons, plant creatures). Some sequences allow players to use ranged weapons/abilities from a first-person perspective; one section allows players to engage in a one-on-one sword-fight with a boss character. Cutscenes occasionally depict characters impaled by swords or shot with arrows; one boss creature emits small puffs of purple fluid when stabbed.”

The main issue that parents will need to deal with here is the violence. The vast majority of the conflict resolution in this game is managed at the point of a sword, bomb, or bow and arrow. There are some darker themes as play here, but many of them are abstracted enough through the gameplay that they aren’t really of serious concern.

Playability Assessment

The Legend of Zelda series has never been “easy.” They are complex games with mind bending temples full of puzzles. Frankly, even the boss fights are mini puzzles. Twilight Princess HD doesn’t change any part of that formula.

One glaring concern for many is that there is no spoken dialogue during the game at all. Everything is done using text. While this shouldn’t be too much of an issue for many families as most early readers won’t have the controller skills to play the game anyway, but it does make playing with a shoulder surfer a bit more challenging as you will have to read all of the text like a storybook. (Bonus points though if you make up a cool voice for Midna!)

Conclusion

Zelda fans probably don’t need to hear this, but this is a very good purchase. The game holds up remarkably well (and is much better if you only ever played the Wii version).

We feel comfortable recommending this one to anyone looking for an adventure on their Wii U.
