I Am Setsuna is being developed by, the Square Enix owned, Tokyo RPG Company and is being billed as the return to the golden age of RPGs. It is intended to be an homage to the SNES RPG Chrono Trigger which is widely considered one of the best games ever made. Those are some seriously big shoes to fill.
Naturally, there are skeptics. Nostalgia is a wonderful thing, but is it enough to help fuel the production of an RPG that will likely span dozens of hours? I don’t really have an answer for that. The reality is that the magic of Chrono Trigger and other “Golden Era” RPGs can’t really be recreated. They represented perfect execution with limited resources and broke new ground. Simply put: the world was different after they came along and new games like I am Setsuna can’t escape that fact.
With all of that said, the new trailer looks stunning. I don’t know much about the characters yet, but I am already getting attached to them which I think is critical for a game like this to work.
The game is currently out in Japan, but will be coming to the PlayStation 4 and PC on July 17th, 2016.
