Disclaimer: This is a sponsored post. The people over at Connected Camps reach out to our staff and requested that we publish a post about their program in exchange for compensation. I am required to disclose that, but rather than sneak the disclosure in at the end in a tiny font I wanted to declare it right up front along with the promise that I believe in this program and would not have published anything if I didn’t.
There is hardly a grade school aged kid who hasn’t at least heard of Minecraft. It has taken over the minds and hearts of our kids… and honestly? It’s great! Minecraft is so much more than “just a video game” that I am overjoyed when I hear a kid talking about playing. The game comes jam packed with loads of potential for learning and for the expression of creativity. Unfortunately, the game is somewhat complex and is intimidating to less tech-savvy parents. That, my friends, is where Connected Camps comes in!
We’ve talked about Connected Camps before. They run a virtual summer camp using online Minecraft servers. The summer has come and gone, but they are still offering services. Now they are running an afterschool coding camp to help kids learn the Lua programming language.
The program is intended for kids aged ten to fourteen and is being run in two four-week sessions. The scheduling details are below.
One of the most interesting aspects of Minecraft is the fact that it is malleable. Players can play the game as-is or their can dive into the code and create their own mods that can drastically alter the gaming experience. Tinkering “under the hood” of their favorite game could spark an interest in your child that could carry forward into a valuable skill (or even a career).
