Quick Verdict on Fortnite
Fortnite is rated T for Teen (13+). For younger players, the most important step is setting up an Epic Games cabined account, which restricts chat, purchases, and social features automatically. Then apply platform-level controls on top. This guide covers both layers for every platform your child might be playing on.
At this point, just about every parent has heard of Fortnite. It’s one of the most popular games in the world, it’s free to play, and it’s available on every major platform. If your child is playing, or asking to play, here is everything you need to set it up safely.
The good news: Fortnite has significantly improved its parental control options in recent years. The controls now work across all platforms from a single Epic Games account, which means you set things up once and they apply everywhere. The bad news: the old platform-by-platform settings are now only one layer, and many parents don’t know about the more powerful Epic-level controls underneath.
This guide covers both layers in the order you should tackle them.
What Is Fortnite? A Quick Briefing for Parents

Fortnite is a third-person shooter developed and published by Epic Games. It is best known for its Battle Royale mode, where 100 players drop onto a map, gather weapons and resources, and fight until one player or team is left standing. The game is free to download and play on every major platform including PC, Mac, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and mobile.
Fortnite’s rating is T for Teen (13+). The ESRB’s rating summary covers violence, mild language, and the ability to purchase virtual currency. The game does not contain gore, sexual content, or strong language, which is why it sits at T rather than M. That said, the online environment introduces real-world risks that the rating does not account for.
THE REAL RISK IN FORTNITE
The content of the game itself is not the main concern for most parents. The bigger issues are:
- Voice and text chat with strangers. By default, Fortnite allows players to communicate with anyone in their match. This includes adults.
- In-game purchases. Fortnite sells V-Bucks (its virtual currency) for real money. Skins, emotes, and battle passes add up quickly without purchase controls in place.
- User-generated islands. Fortnite’s Creative Mode allows anyone to publish custom game experiences. Not all of them are appropriate for younger players.
All three of these risks can be addressed through the controls in this guide.
Step 1: Set Up Epic Games Parental Controls (Do This First)
This is the most important step and the one most parents miss. Epic’s parental controls work at the account level, which means they apply to Fortnite on every device your child plays on. You set them once, and they follow the account.
Cabined Accounts: What They Are and Why They Matter
If your child is under 13 and used their real date of birth when creating their Epic account, their account is automatically a cabined account. Cabined accounts come with the following restrictions applied by default:
- No voice chat
- No text chat
- No friend requests without parental PIN
- No in-game purchases without parental approval
- No notifications from other players
These restrictions stay in place until a parent or guardian logs in and actively chooses to unlock them. This is the correct starting point for any child under 13.
IMPORTANT
Cabined accounts only work if your child entered their real date of birth at signup. If they entered a false age to bypass restrictions, the account will not have these protections. Check the date of birth on their Epic account and correct it if needed.
How to Set Up Your Parental Controls PIN
Whether your child has a cabined account or not, you should set a parental controls PIN on their Epic account. This PIN is required to make any changes to the parental settings, approve friend requests, and authorize purchases.
| Setting Up Your Epic PIN (All Platforms) |
| 1.ย Go to epicgames.com and log into your child’s Epic Games account. 2.ย Click your account name in the top right corner, then select Account. 3.ย In the left menu, click Parental Controls. 4.ย Select Set Up Parental Controls. 5.ย Confirm your email address. 6.ย Create a 6-digit PIN and confirm it. Keep this PIN somewhere your child cannot access. 7.ย Once the PIN is set, configure the individual controls below. Platform note: These settings apply across all devices where your child plays Fortnite with this Epic account. |
What You Can Control Through Epic
Once your PIN is set, you can adjust the following from the Epic Account Portal or from within Fortnite’s settings menu:
| Setting | What It Does |
| Voice Chat | Control who your child can speak with. Options range from Everyone down to Friends Only or Nobody. For children under 10, the maximum allowed is Friends Only. |
| Text Chat | Same options as voice chat. The mature language filter is always on for players under 13. |
| Friend Requests | Require your PIN before your child can send or accept friend requests. |
| Purchases | Require your PIN for any Epic Games Store or in-game purchases. Note: this does not cover purchases made through PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo storefronts. |
| Content Rating | Set a maximum content rating for experiences your child can access. Useful for blocking M-rated user-created islands in Creative Mode. |
| Daily Spending Limit | For players under 13, a $100 daily limit applies automatically. You can require PIN approval above this amount. |
Step 2: Apply Platform-Level Controls
Epic’s controls cover Fortnite specifically. But your child’s console or device has its own parental controls that sit on top of the game. These are worth applying too, because they cover purchases made through the platform storefront (which Epic’s controls do not reach) and can set system-wide limits on screen time and content.
| ย PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 |
| 1.ย From the Fortnite Lobby, select the Menu icon (three stacked bars) in the top right. 2.ย Open Options (the gear icon) and select Parental Controls. 3.ย Enter your Epic parental PIN. 4.ย Adjust Mature Language Filter, Chat settings, and Spending. 5.ย For PS4/PS5 system-level controls: go to Settings > Family Management (PS5) or Parental Controls (PS4) to set content restrictions and spending limits at the console level. Platform note: PlayStation purchases are not controlled by your Epic PIN. Set a separate spending PIN in your PlayStation account to prevent unauthorized purchases from the PS Store. |
| ย Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S |
| 1.ย From the Fortnite Lobby, press the Menu button on your controller. 2.ย Open Options (the gear icon) and select Parental Controls. 3.ย Enter your Epic parental PIN. 4.ย Adjust Chat, Mature Language, and Spending settings. 5.ย For Xbox system-level controls: go to account.microsoft.com/family to manage your child’s Microsoft Family Safety settings, including spending limits for the Microsoft Store. Platform note:Microsoft Family Safety is one of the more robust parental control systems available. It allows screen time limits, content filters, and spending approval across all Xbox games, not just Fortnite. |
| ย Nintendo Switch |
| 1.ย From the Fortnite Lobby, press the + button to open Settings. 2.ย Highlight the gear icon (Options) and press A. 3.ย Select Parental Controls and enter your Epic PIN. 4.ย Adjust Chat and Spending settings. 5.ย For Switch system-level controls: download the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app on your phone for screen time limits, content restrictions, and online play controls. Platform note:The Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app is free and gives you real-time visibility into what your child is playing and for how long. It is one of the more parent-friendly systems available. |
| Windows PC and Mac |
| 1.ย From the Fortnite Lobby, click the Menu icon (three stacked bars) in the top right. 2.ย Open Options (the gear icon) and select Parental Controls. 3.ย Enter your Epic PIN. 4.ย Adjust Chat, Mature Language, and Spending controls. 5.ย For PC-level controls: use Windows Family Safety (account.microsoft.com/family) or Mac Screen Time (System Settings > Screen Time) to set time limits and restrict the Epic Games Launcher. Platform note:PC is the highest-risk platform for mod access. Remind your child that downloading Fortnite files from anywhere other than the official Epic Games Launcher is against the rules and can expose their computer to malware. |
| iOS and Android (Mobile) |
| 1.ย From the Fortnite main screen, tap the Menu icon (three stacked bars) in the top right. 2.ย Tap the gear icon and select Parental Controls. 3.ย Enter your Epic PIN. 4.ย Adjust Chat and Spending settings. For iOS: use Screen Time (Settings > Screen Time) to restrict purchases from the App Store and set daily time limits. For Android: use Google Family Link to manage app access and purchases. |
Recommended Settings by Age
Every child is different. These are starting points based on the content risks in Fortnite, not rigid rules.
| Age | Recommended Starting Settings |
| Under 10 | Voice and text chat: Nobody. Friend requests: PIN required. Purchases: PIN required. Consider limiting to LEGO Fortnite mode rather than Battle Royale. |
| 10-12 | Voice chat: Friends Only. Text chat: Friends Only. Friend requests: PIN required. Purchases: PIN required. Review friend list periodically. |
| 13+ | Voice chat: Friends or Team. Text chat: Friends or Team. Purchase PIN at your discretion. Have a conversation about online safety before removing restrictions. |
The Bottom Line
Fortnite is one of the most parent-friendly shooters available, with a T rating and a parental control system that has genuinely improved over the years. The Epic account controls, set up once, follow your child across every platform. The biggest risks, which are unsupervised chat and unchecked spending, are both fully addressable through the steps in this guide.
If you decide to allow your child to play, setting up these controls is the right move before the first match. If you decide not to allow it, that’s a completely reasonable call too. Either way, having a conversation with your child about why you made the decision matters more than the decision itself.
