Weekly News Update

Exciting things happen in the world of gaming every single day. Everything happens so quickly that it can be tough for a parent to keep track of. Between work, carting the kids to everywhere under the sun, cooking, cleaning, and maybe (just maybe) getting a chance to sleep for a few hours parents just don’t have the time to keep up with everything happening in their child’s hobby.

If the above paragraph describes you, then we have an answer for you. EFG will be publishing a digest of some of the biggest gaming news that your family needs to know every Monday night!

A New Wizarding World?

Chucklefish Games, the company who published Stardew Valley, teased their next game this past week and it looks like it will be pretty captivating. The theme is a wizard school that is definitely not based on the Harry Potter universe. Nope. No siree. That would be bad. This one will likely be legally distinct, but have a lot of clever winks and nods to the source material.

We dont have any details yet, but we’re already excited.

Wizards of the Coast Announced MTG Arena

Wizards of the Coast has been trying to find a qay to bring its venerable CCG, Magic: The Gathering, to the digital space for years. It currently exists on MTG Online, but that service is difficult to follow and doesnt truly represent what the game looks like when played on a table. The answer to this problem appears to be MTG Arena. It was just recently revealed by Wizards and is currently in a Closed Beta.

Note: Last week was a slow news week thanks to the Thanksgiving holiday, but we did get a few interesting nuggets for you this week.

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare has reached 8 million players.

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare infographic

I had my doubts when EA announced PvZ: GW a few years ago. It was an interesting idea with a great dad joke attached to it, but I couldn’t help but question how sustainable a family friendly shooter would be. We’ve played the game in our house pretty regularly and the boys have enjoyed themselves, but I never really gave the game much thought.

New numbers from EA show that it has reached 8 million players. It is worth noting that this doesn’t mean it has 8 million sales because if it did they would have said so. Instead this is likely including people playing on multiple different accounts on the same console. (My family would account for three of those players).

This is good news leading into the sequel that is launching next February. We’ll report more news as we get closer to that one!

The PS4 hits a new sales milestone!

Sony-Playstation-logo

Sony has announced that it has hit a milestone with 30.2 million PS4s sold to customers. This places the PS4 firmly in the company of the fastest selling consoles in history. These results were reported before Black Friday where there were multiple amazing bundles available for sale.

Sony has been very forthcoming with the good news regarding their console since launch. This stands in stark contrast to Microsoft who has not reported sales figures directly in about a year. This has forced the video games press to use some serious math to try to puzzle the sales situation out. The folks over at ArsTechnica have created some amazing charts to help analyze the situation and update them whenever we get a new morsel of info.

Black Friday Sales Results

This is being published on Cyber Monday so we haven’t really had much time for all of the results to trickle in, but some of the early reports are very encouraging for console manufacturers.

Sales data released by Adobe showed that Black Friday spending was up 14% over last year in the US and the PS4 and Xbox One were both in the top five best selling items of the day.

Target came out early with a report showing that the much maligned Wii U was their top selling item on their website. This was likely on the shoulders of the amazing bundle that included both Splatoon and Smash Brothers for Wii U.

Minecraft Story Mode Episode 3 Incoming!

Sony working on PS2 Emulation on PS4

WIRED reported, and confirmed this past week, that Sony was working on allowing the PlayStation 4 to emulate PlayStation 2 games.  The direct quote from the WIRED article reads as follows:

“We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation,” a Sony representative told WIRED via email. “We have nothing further to comment at this point in time.”

When this happens the PlayStation 4 will be able to play PlayStation 2 games using its improved processing power. This would make them look sharper and update them to HD, but it won’t really change the graphics themselves. The art will still be the same afterall.

What makes this exciting is that there is a veritable MOUNTAIN of PlayStation 2 games out there and a lot of them are perfect for families.

New Valkyria Chronicles Coming to PS4!!!

SEGA has confirmed that they are working on a new entry in the fan favorite Valkyria Chronicles series.

The original Valkyria Chronicles was a surprise hit on the PS3 but its two sequels were relegated to the PSP and weren’t even released in North America.

The original has since been brought over to the US on Steam and it was very successful. I can’t help but think that this tipped SEGA off to the demand for the games.

The next game will be a prequel and will be called Valkyria: Azure Revolution. A demo will be included in the Valkyria Chronicles HD Remaster coming next year. The new trailer is below. It is only confirmed for a Japanese release so far, but I think it is a strong possibility that the game will find its way here.

Street Fighter V tutorial includes Young Ryu and Ken

Street Fighter V is coming to the PS4 next February. Until then we can expect dribs and drabs of information to keep up the hype train. The most recent nugget came in the form of a trailer for the tutorial mode that features Ryu and Ken back in their younger days.

Super Star Wars for SNES released on PSN – causing the world to implode.

Sony released a package of older Star Wars games along with the collector’s edition of Star Wars Battlefront. One of the games, Super Star Wars, was  originally an SNES exclusive and this marks the first time an SNES exclusive game was released on a non-Nintendo console.

The game is available for purchase for $9.99 on the PSN and it well worth it for Star Wars fans who are trying to relive the games of their youth or share that joy with their kids!

Awesome Metroid fan movie released starring Jessica Chobot from Nerdist.com

Further proof has been provided that Nintendo needs to work on movie deals for some of its properties. Take a look and judge for yourself.

Activision Blizzard Purchases the Company Behind Candy Crush

Activision Blizzard is a giant in the gaming industry. They are responsible for some of the biggest franchises in video games and don’t really show any signs of slowing down. Their one weakness? They don’t have a strong mobile presence. They certainly had the option to invest the money and time to build their own, but it turns out they just wanted to go buy one. They didn’t exactly take the budget option either.

Instead, they spent 5.9 billion dollars to purchase King, the company responsible for Candy Crush and more than 400 million monthly users.

To put that into perspective: They spent almost 2 billion dollars more than Disney spent to purchase all of LucasFilms.

Activision Blizzard Announces TV and Movie Studio

Activision Blizzard has been looking to spends some money recently. They have announced that they intend to open a film and television studio to produce scripted content for their various game properties. The projects they have announced so far include a Skylanders television series and a series of movies based on the massive Call of Duty franchise.

The Skylanders TV series is already in the works and is called “Skylanders Academy.” It is going to be an animated feature that will include voice talent like Justin Long (“Alvin and the Chipmunks”), Ashley Tisdale (“Phineas and Ferb”), Jonathan Banks (“Breaking Bad”) and Norm Macdonald (Saturday Night Live).

Super Mario Maker Updated

Super-Mario-Maker

Super Mario Maker has gotten the update a lot of people have been waiting for. It was updated last week to include checkpoints. This might seem like a small change, but this gives level designers the opportunity to reward players for completing challenging sections of their levels.

Overwatch Confirmed for Consoles With a Spring Release Date!!

Activision Blizzard revealed a lot of details about their character based “Hero shooter” Overwatch.

Most relevant to us? It is a T for teen rating by the ESRB. Any time guns get involved it is possible for the rating to climb, but they managed to avoid it by not animating too much blood or gore. The character models are a highlight too as the female characters, that are often tough to expose kids to, are stylized and tasteful.

They also announced that the game will be released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One with at a price of $59.99. The price itself isn’t much of a shock; this is the standard release price for triple a games. What makes this a surprise is that Overwatch appeared to be a free to play game from the time it was announced. We won’t really know which plan would have been better until the game is out, but this announcement should make people who dislike free to play models more comfortable.

World of Warcaft: Legion Gets A Release Window and An Opening Cinematic

The upcoming expansion to the smash hit World of Warcraft will release during the summer of 2016. It can’t come quick enough though because WoW has been losing subscribers every month and expansions, typically, rejuvenate the numbers.

We also got our first glimpse at the cinematic trailer for the game which showcases teamwork between the Alliance and the Horde against the Burning Legion. Its an epic cinematic and it managed to bring my excitement level to a new peak. Take a look for yourself:
