Console Specs Translated for Non-Tech Savvy Parents

Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are all going to be releasing new console hardware by the end of 2017. This means that we will be reading a LOT about technical specifications for game consoles for the next 18 months.

The next pieces of hardware from Microsoft and Sony (the Xbox Scorpio and PlayStation 4 Pro respectively) are, essentially, upgrades to their existing consoles. They will still work the same and play (for the most part) the same games. The difference is going to come in their ability to produce higher fidelity graphics than their predecessors.

We are going to see a lot of cheerful videos and carefully worded press releases that are going to be chock full of technical terms that might be confusing to a layman.

We want you to be able to make educated decisions about the games your children play. And, with that in mind, we felt that it would be a good idea to publish a glossary of technology terms that might sound like gibberish to parents who aren’t super tech savvy.

Take a look below and be sure to let us know in the comments if there is something we missed!

This is, for all intents and purposes, just a fancy term used for the monitor and TV that the console will be hooked up to. This is where you will see the images that are being created by the console in order to play games, watch shows, etc.

A lot of the descriptions for new consoles and PCs will include information about a “GPU.” This is an acronym that stands for the “Graphics Processing Unit.” That is the name for a special kind of circuit that is responsible for creating images that will be output to the TV or Monitor.

Refresh Rate

TV shows, movies, and video games are all presented to us as rapidly changing streams of still pictures. As technology has improved we have been able to display more images, commonly referred to as “frames” per second. This has helped move away from the jerky and borderline unnatural movement found in silent movies to the fast and fluid movements we see in modern television.

The number of frames per second that a piece of tech displays is often reported in “hertz” or “htz.” For example, a 60 htz television is able to display 60 frames per second. In general, this means that the animation will be smoother and more natural.

4k Resolution

The “Resolution” of a display is a numerical representation of how many individual pixels that a display can show.

As Sony and Microsoft launch their next wave of updated consoles, the push is to support “4k resolution.” This is shorthand, but it represents a resolution of 3840 pixels x 2160 lines.

In general, the more pixels that can be displayed within a given area the more clear the image is and the better it can be animated. Most of us likely experienced that sort of change when we watched HD television for the first time. We were able to see fine details like the numbers on players’ jerseys more easily.

This is important for video games especially because the display AND the console both matter. Playing a Super Nintendo game on a modern HD television won’t make it look like modern video games. It is still limited by the hardware.

HDR stands for High-dynamic-range Imaging. This is a term used in photography that represents a greater dynamic ranging of color than is normally possible. In other words, the colors that are displayed by the media are more true to real life than previously displayed. This means brighter whites and darker blacks as well as more clear colors in between.

This is a feature that will be made available as part of the Xbox One S and will be available on all PS4 models. But, it is not something that everyone will be able to take advantage of. This is a feature that needs a cutting edge TV in order to work.

Project Scorpio by Microsoft is the upgraded version of the Xbox One that will release next year. Microsoft has described it as having “6 teraflops.”

A teraflop is a unit of measure for the power of a console or other computing device. This is an acronym that represents the number of calculations that a machine can process in one second. The breakdown of the acronym is as follows:

Tera” means Trillion

FLOP” stands for “Floating-Point Operations per Second”

For example, a processor that is measured as having “6 Teraflops” is capable of solving 6 trillion math problems in one second. To put it simply: The more calculations a processor can make the better the graphics it will be able to output.

Internal vs External Memory

Video game consoles are, essentially, specialized computers. Everyone knows what a hard drive is, because the computers we use at work, at home, and at school all have them. Video game consoles are no different.

The Xbox One and PS4 both launched initially with 500 GB (Gigabyte) internal hard drives. While this might seem like enough it fills up quickly if anyone in the household purchases games digitally. The newer versions of these consoles will include hard drives of up to 2 TB (Terabytes) of internal storage space.

For sake of illustration 1 Terabyte is the data equivalent of an 8 foot stack of CDS. That SEEMS like a lot of room, but some games can be HUGE.

There are external hard drives that will work with the different consoles though. So if your console is full, then you should look into them!

ReCore, an action adventure game from Keiji Inafune and Armiture Studios has a new gameplay trailer and a release date!

ReCore was announced during last year’s Microsoft E3 press briefing. It looked cool, but the information they released last year left out a LOT of details. Fortunately, the mystery was cleared up thanks to new information.

ReCore features the adventurer Joule as she explores a desolate and robot filled landscape with her team of CoreBots. The trailer showed more members of her team than were named, but we were given some information for three of her companions.

Mack – The Explorer: This is a doglike robot that is shown sniffing the ground  as though he can search for things. Perhaps he’ll be able to search for hidden items or secrets in the various environments? The trailer also shows a pretty cool charge dash attach that looks like it can even hit multiple enemies.

Seth – The Escape Artist: Seth is a four legged walker type CoreBot. He appears to be able to grab on to some surfaces like a magnet and glide along them. This will help with navigation and traversal. He also has a gun in his head which gives him a useful ranged attack.

Duncan – The Heavy Hitter: Duncan is a gorilla type CoreBot. He’s massive. He moves slowly, but heaven help you if you get in his range. He also appears to have some sort of fire based area of effect attack that he activates by slamming on the ground.

Joule isn’t helpless though. She has an arsenal of guns at her disposal and  is also very agile. Having a pair of rocket boots isn’t exactly working against her either.

We don’t know much more that this, but we DO know that the game will launch exclusively on Xbox One and Windows 10 PC on September 13, 2016.

Prepare to Set Sail on a Sea of Thieves

Editor’s Note: This article was originally published on Pixelkin.org. Make sure to check them out when you get a chance!

There are few eras in human history viewed with more misplaced and fantastical nostalgia than the age of sail. People the world over just love the idea of pirates. And that love has taken shape in the soon to be released Sea of Thieves. It is being developed for Xbox One and Windows 10 PC by Rare.

Sea of Thieves is a game where players take on the roles of pirates and go on piratey missions looking for treasure on the high seas. The game features ship to ship combat and plenty of islands to explore. The goal of the game is for players to build their own unique pirate story as they explore the world, team up with other players and complete missions and objectives.

We don’t have a lot of hard details just yet, but the game looks to have a framework similar to Destiny and the Division. These are persistent online worlds that you navigate with your character completing missions, taking on challenges and trying to grow your specific character. The difference here is obviously all in the setting. This is not set in a far future dystopia or a post pandemic New York. Instead, Sea of Thieves is full of lush, bright colors and is set in what looks like an analog to the Caribbean.

We don’t have a firm release date yet, but your eyes on Pixelkin.org for more info as time passes.

forza horizon 3

Microsoft gave the world its first look at Forza Horizon 3 at their E3 2016 media briefing. The Forza franchise is one of the pillars of the Xbox games lineup so it is almost a given that there will be a Forza game every holiday. 2016 will be no exception thanks for a release date of September 27.

Forza Horizon 2 took place in the Mediterranean.  You were driving on cobblestone roads and taking shortcuts through vineyards. The third entry in the series takes place in Australia, which is home to some of the most diverse landscapes you can imagine. There are lush forests, highways that overlook the see, and vast deserts. The idea of off-roading through the Australian Outback has me very excited for this game.

One important feature that Microsoft revealed regarding this game is that it will be a part of the Xbox Play Anywhere Initiative. This means that purchasing a copy of this game for the Xbox One will include a free copy of the game for windows 10. Furthermore, players will be able to play multiplayer games across all of those platforms together seamlessly. They performed a demonstration at the event where four players were racing to the beach. One player was on the newly announced Xbox One S, another was on an Xbox One, a third was on a PC rig, while a fourth was on high end windows 10 PC with a fancy steering wheel set up. All four players participated together in the same race without any hangups.

Microsoft made a number of significant announcements about Xbox and Windows 10 exclusive games during their E3 media briefing, but the last game they showed was Halo Wars 2. They did so using an amazing cinematic trailer that helped to frame the conflict in the game and give us a taste for the main villain. Take a look at the video above to see what I mean.

Halo Wars 2 has quietly been one of the more interesting titles in the roster of upcoming Xbox One games. This is a sequel to a Halo Wars, a real time strategy game that sold *alright* and was generally well reviewed. It was by no means a pillar of the gaming universe.

The announcement was a surprise last year at Gamescom 2015, but this year we were fortunate enough to get even more great news about the game. 343 Studios has launched an open beta starting today and lasting until June 20th. That is a full week for Xbox One players to get their hands on the game and make a decision about whether or not it is for them.

You’ll have to make your decision quickly though, because the release date isn’t as far away as one would have thought. It is launching on February 21, 2017.

Mojang and Microsoft made some significant Minecraft announcements during their E3 2016 Press Briefing. Minecraft has already sold over 100 million copies, but neither company is ready to rest on their laurels. Massive updates are coming to all versions of the game to increase the number of ways people can play together, and number of people they can play with.

They opened the Minecraft segment with a demo that showcased  cross-device play between iOS, Android, Samsung Gear VR, and Windows 10 devices. This is being made possible through what they are calling the “Friendly Update” for the Minecraft Windows 10 Edition and the Minecraft: Pocket Edition.

They also announced that they would be launching the Minecraft Realms services that will allow Windows PC and Mobile players to create and host their own multiplayer worlds that they can play in with their friends 24/7 even if they are offline. A one month demo of Minecraft Realms is available to people with Xbox Live accounts starting today.

They also announced that they will be bringing more add-ons and texture packs to allow players to more fully customize their worlds. Even more announcements and surprises are in store for us at Minecon in September.

Exciting things happen in the world of video games every single day. Everything happens so quickly that it can be tough for a parent to keep track of. Between work, carting the kids to everywhere under the sun, cooking, cleaning, and maybe (just maybe) getting a chance to sleep for a few hours parents just don’t have the time to keep up with everything happening in their child’s hobby.

If the above paragraph describes you, then we have an answer for you. Every Friday morning EFG will be publishing a digest of some of the biggest video game news that your family needs to know. So kick back with your morning coffee and enjoy!

PlayStation 4 Price Drop!

Sony Playstation 4 to release on November 15, 2013!

Sony announced a price drop on the PlayStation 4 in Japan a while back, so it was safe to assume that the price drop would be applied in the North America region at some point. But, we didn’t have confirmation until October 8th when Sony confirmed it all. Moving forward the PlayStation 4 will be $349.99 (a $50 price drop).

This is a significant announcement for them as the price of the PS4 has been stable since its launch. This does look like it will help the console compete with the Xbox One this holiday season.

Several Xbox One Bundles Announced for the Holiday

The logo for the Xbox One, Microsoft's next generation console

Microsoft spent last week announcing a new Xbox One bundle every day. Several of them included games like Fallout 4 and Gears of War which aren’t family friendly. But, there are a few that are perfect for families.

The bundles announced each day last week were:

Monday: Xbox One 1TB Rise of the Tomb Raider Bundle

Tuesday: Xbox One 1TB Holiday Bundle including Gears of War, Rare Replay and Ori and the Blind Forest

Wednesday: Xbox One 500GB The LEGO Movie Videogame Bundle

Thursday: Xbox One Special Edition White Gears of War Bundle and Xbox One With Kinect Bundle

Friday: Xbox One 1TB Fallout 4 Bundle (includes Fallout 4 game as well as Xbox 360 Fallout 3 token)

Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddess will air on The Late Show next week!

The sympony will be appearing as Colbert’s musical guest on Oct 13th.

The performance will feature music from the upcoming 3DS title Legend of Zelda: Tri-Force Heroes.

Mighty No. 9 gets a new release date

Mighty No 9 logo

Mighty No. 9 will be released on Feb. 9, 2016 in North America according to an announcement by Deep Silver (the game’s publisher). It was a huge Kickstarter success, but the momentum has dulled in recent months as the development as sputtered.

Mighty No. 9 will be available both digital and on disc for PlayStation 4, Wii U and Xbox One. It will be released digitally on the same day for Linux, Mac, PlayStation 3, Windows PC and Xbox 360.

I can’t wait to play this game, but I am sad to admit I am not very optimistic that it will be released on this newly announced date either. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Nintendo 3DS selects announced in UK

Nintendo UK announced a set of 3DS games being reprinted and discounted called the 3DS selects. Historically, games in this lineup (for the Wii and Wii U) have been sold at a reduced price.

The games listed in the announcement are: The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Star Fox 64 3D, Nintendogs +Cats, Mario Tennis Open, Yoshi’s New Island, and Mario Party Island Tour.

We don’t know if this program will continue in the US, but it is very possible as we approach the Holiday season.

Project Spark for Xbox One goes completely free on Oct 5!

Project Spark

Microsoft has announced that Project Spark, the free-to-start game creation program will be transitioning to fully free starting on October 5th. The means that DLC that was previously behind a paywall will be available to everyone.

The update includes HUGE boosts in the maximum terrain and maximum prop limit, more than 200 new assets, as well as an increase to 100 total upload slots for each creator.

Anyone who spent money on the game before it transitions to free will release a credit on their account between thirty to sixty days from October 5th.

Project Spark is a very robust game creation program that presents its users with a change to make some pretty in depth experiences. If anyone in  your family is interested in game design then this is worth a look. Just be ready for a steep learning curve.

Mario Tennis Ultra Smash Gets a Release Date!

Mario Tennis Ultra Smash will serve up another set of Mario Tennis action on November 20. It supports up to four players and will retail for $49.99.   We don’t know much else about the gameplay but here’s hoping it’s an ace!
