The Pokemon Company celebrated the franchise’s 30th anniversary on Pokemon Day by closing out its Pokemon Presents livestream with one of the biggest reveals in recent memory: the official announcement of Generation 10. The games are called Pokemon Winds and Waves, and while the reveal was relatively brief, there is enough here to dig into. Here is everything confirmed from the announcement trailer.
What Are the Games Called?
The Generation 10 mainline games are officially titled Pokemon Winds and Pokemon Waves, two separate versions releasing simultaneously worldwide in 2027. This follows the long-standing Pokemon tradition of pairing games with contrasting natural themes, continuing a pattern that has run through the series since the original Red and Blue.
When Do They Come Out?
Pokemon Winds and Pokemon Waves are confirmed for a simultaneous worldwide release in 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2. No specific date has been announced yet, but the worldwide simultaneous launch is notable, as earlier Pokemon generations sometimes saw long delays between Japanese and international releases.
What Is the Setting Like?

The official website describes a world of beautiful windswept islands and a vast ocean with glittering waves that ebb and flow. The region is built around lush island environments, and the Pokemon that live there have developed their own unique ecosystems shaped by the landscape.
The games feature an open world structure, which continues the direction The Pokemon Company explored with Scarlet and Violet. Players will team up with Pokemon to overcome challenges including, intriguingly, the forces of nature themselves.
What About the Player Character?

One confirmed detail that adds a fun version-specific twist: your character’s outfit will differ depending on whether you are playing Pokemon Winds or Pokemon Waves. The official site shows distinct looks for each version’s protagonist, though the story implications of this difference have not yet been explained.
The Three New Starter Pokemon

The most exciting part of any new Pokemon announcement is always the starters, and Winds and Waves delivered. All three have now been officially detailed with stats and personality descriptions:

Browt, the Bean Chick Pokemon, is the Grass-type starter.
It stands 1 foot tall, weighs 7.7 lbs., and has the Overgrow ability. The official description says it runs about energetically while photosynthesizing using the leaves on its brow, and is described as lively but a bit clumsy.

Pombon, the Puppy Pokemon, is the Fire-type starter.
It stands 1 foot 4 inches tall, weighs 14.8 lbs., and has the Blaze ability. The area below its throat glows faintly from a heat-generating organ in its lungs. It is described as guileless and friendly.

Gecqua, the Water Gecko Pokemon, is the Water-type starter.
It stands 1 foot tall, weighs 9.5 lbs., and has the Torrent ability. It launches springy balls of water from its tail and is described as very intelligent and shrewd.
The internet is already firmly divided on which one is best, as tradition demands.
Special Pikachu Variants Revealed

The official website confirmed the appearance of two special Pikachu with brand-new looks: Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu. The site does not explain their role in the story yet, but specifically notes to look forward to future announcements about how these Pikachu could be involved in your adventure.
New Language Support
Beginning with Pokemon Winds and Waves, Brazilian Portuguese will be officially supported as a selectable language for the first time in the mainline series. The Pokemon Company cited expanding accessibility and bringing the world together through Pokemon as the motivation for the addition.
What Platforms Will It Be On?
Pokemon Winds and Pokemon Waves are confirmed as Nintendo Switch 2 exclusives, with a simultaneous worldwide release planned for 2027.
If your family does not yet have a Switch 2, this may be worth factoring into your planning ahead of the 2027 launch.
Which Pokemon Are Confirmed for Winds and Waves?

The announcement trailer revealed a substantial number of returning Pokemon alongside the new starters. Here is the full list of confirmed Pokemon spotted so far. Note: entries in parentheses indicate evolutions or forms that are part of a confirmed line but may not have been explicitly shown.

What Are We Still Waiting to Learn?
The region does not yet have an official name, and no information has been shared about the story, Gym Leaders, legendary Pokemon, or additional game mechanics. The games are still well over a year away, so expect the official reveals to roll out steadily through 2026 and into 2027.
The Pokemon Company has set up an official site at Pokemon.com/WindsWaves where future announcements will be posted.
A Note for Parents
Mainline Pokemon games have consistently earned an E for Everyone rating from the ESRB, making them appropriate for players of all ages. Nothing in today’s reveal suggests Winds and Waves will be any different. We will publish a full parent guide ahead of launch once more details become available.
We will keep updating this page as new information is officially confirmed. Check back for the latest on Pokemon Winds and Waves as we get closer to 2027.
