The game came out in 2022, and it’s already a hit with kids and adults alike. In the game, Kirby must save his home from an evil wizard who has cast a spell over the land. To do so, Kirby will need to use his special abilities to defeat enemies and solve puzzles. The vibrant colors and cute characters are sure to appeal to younger players, while older gamers will appreciate the challenging gameplay. Whether you’re a seasoned gamer or a Nintendo fan who is just getting started, Kirby and the Forgotten Land is a great choice.

Nintendo Switch owners were in for a treat when, this past January, Pokemon Legends: Arceus was released. This new style of action-focused gameplay is a departure from the turn-based games of the main series, and is sure to be a hit with kids. So if you’re looking for a new adventure to take on with your Nintendo Switch, be sure to check out Pokemon Legends: Arceus. You won’t be disappointed.

You can buy Pokemon: Legends Arceus on Amazon here.

PlayStation

Sony-Playstation-logo

PlayStation started the year strong with Horizon: Forbidden West and and is going to finish the year with God of War: Ragnarok. That is a pretty impressive one two punch for gaming audiences in general, but leaves a little to be desired from our perspective. (God of War isn’t on anyone’s Family Game of the Year lists).

Horizon: Forbidden West

The long-awaited sequel to 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn, Forbidden West picks up Aloy’s story as she ventures into unknown territories to uncover the secrets of the machines and save the world from a new threat. The game is set in a beautiful open world full of exotic landscapes and deadly creatures, and it promises to be an amazing adventure for fans of the first game. Whether you’re playing on PS4 or PS5, Forbidden West is a must-play title that shouldn’t be missed.

The franchise is known for its realistic portrayal of car physics and for its large selection of vehicles – Gran Turismo 7 has over 1200 different cars to choose from!

Historically, summer has been a slow time for video games. Publishers would often push their games off to the fall to have their games incorporated into the Holiday rush. That doesn’t happen so much anymore. There are so many video games being released each year that there really isn’t any dead time. This June is no exception.

Below is a list of some of the best video games being released to consoles and PC in the month of June. All of them are rated T for Teen or lower by the ESRB.

Silt

PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC – June 1

Silt is a black and white, atmospheric adventure game that is a cross between Limbo and Song of the Sea. It’s rated T for Teen by the ESRB, but it has a creepy vibe that might shake some kids.

Card Shark

Switch, PC – June 2

I didn’t think I would ever be writing about a game like this. Card Shark is a game set in 18th Century France and you play as a gambler trying to win games of cards to get access to the King. The key here is that you win by cheating.

Souldiers

PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC – June 2

We’ll have to play it and find out if it is any good. But, Souldiers is the combination of Souls-like combat, Metroid-like map exploration, and RPG elements. You choose one of three classes and progress through a fantasy world full of traps, monsters, and other hazards. I’ve been looking forward to this one since it was announced and was pretty bummed when it was delayed from its original release date in May, but the time is almost here!

Unexplored 2: The Wayfarer’s Legacy

Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC – June 2

Unexplored 2 is an Open World, Roguelite RPG that is all about exploration. It has a gorgeous hand-drawn art style, snappy combat, and a massive world to explore.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords

Switch – June 8

It’s a good time to be a Star Wars fan. The Disney + TV shows are (mostly) well-loved and there are plenty of great video games to play. Star Wars: KOTOR 2 is a blast from the past that is being pulled forward into the Switch for a new generation of players to enjoy. The only question that remains: Which side of the Force will you choose?

Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles

Switch – June 10

Demon Slayer is a very popular anime right now so a video game adaptation was inevitable. This has already been available on PC, Playstation, and Xbox, and is now being brought to Switch. This one earns its T rating with anime blood splatter and some foul language. With that said, the action in the game is no better or worse than the anime so if your kids are watching the show (on Netflix) then you can feel comfortable letting them play the game.

Mario Strikers: Battle League – EFG Pick of the Month!!!

Switch – June 10

I have to be honest. I never thought I would see the day when Nintendo would release another Mario Soccer game, but here we are. Mario Strikers: Battle League is a 5 v 5 soccer game that features Mario characters and over-the-top action. It isn’t a traditional soccer game though. This is a battle soccer game with full contact, an electric fence, and most of the weapons from Mario Kart. Our family has been counting down the days since its announcement and it’s almost time to take the pitch!

Redout 2

PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC – June 16

F-Zero and Wipeout are well-loved franchises that are mostly dead in the water right now. Redoubt 2 is a new entry in the Zero-G racing genre and it is FAST. If you liked those games in the past, or think your kids might, then this looks like a great option.

Fall Guys

PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch – June 21

Fall Guys is finally coming to Switch and Xbox! It’s been a huge hit on PlayStation and PC and I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t continue that success elsewhere. As an added bonus: It’s now a free-to-play game that everyone on those consoles can enjoy!

Wreckfest

Switch – June 21

Wreckfest is a destruction derby simulator with a whole bunch of game modes. There isn’t much to say about it beyond that. If you like the idea of crashing cars into each other, then this is a game to keep on your radar.

Sonic Origins

PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC – June 23

This is a collection that includes Sonic 1, 2, 3, and Sonic CD in one package. They are remastered with improved visuals and animations and a bunch of other perks (like being able to play as either Tales or Knuckles in any of the games). The original versions of the games are included in the package as well.

Capcom Fighting Collection

PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC – June 24

This is a massive collection of Capcom fighting games. The cynical among us might assume that This is just a collection of Street Fighter games, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. The collection also includes a number of Dark Stalkers games (some of which were never released in North America), Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, as well as Cyberbots and Red Earth (two fighting games that were never even released on consoles before!) Fighting game fans should keep their eyes peeled for this one.

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes

Switch – June 24

Fire Emblem is an immensely popular strategy RPG series that, somehow, blends perfectly with the bombastic one vs many combat in Musou games. My oldest is a massive Fire Emblem: Three Houses fan and Three Hopes is presenting an alternate universe story with many of the same characters.

DNF Duel

PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PC) – June 28

DNF Duel is a wild fighting game from ARC System Works where each of the characters are adventuring classes from a dungeon crawler like Ranger and Berseker as opposed to named characters.

The PlayStation 5 is still incredibly difficult to find as a result of shortages. This shortage is likely to continue well past the holiday season. That doesn’t mean that there won’t be any available though. Start looking early if that is on your family’s wish list.

The good news is that the PlayStation 4 should be readily available and still has life left in it for families who don’t have a console yet. Noteworthy titles you’ll want to find on deep discounts for the PS4 are Marvel’s Spider-Man, Horizon: Zero Dawn Complete Edition, and the Crash Bandicoot: N-Sane Collection.

Below is a list of games that are great gift ideas for PS5 owners.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart

Buy here!

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is on my shortlist for the game of the year 2021. It is just that good. This is a new game in the franchise that has been built from the ground up to take advantage of the PS5 technology. The levels are designed in such a way that you use rifts to travel through completely different spaces within levels with no load times. It is wild to experience all the different ways that Insomniac takes advantage of the tech.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits

Buy here!

Kena punches way above its weight class. It is a budget title that has gorgeous graphics. It looks and plays like it was made by one of Sony’s high-profile studios. But, it is actually the first game from a company known for fan animations. This is another game in contention for game of the year and it will likely be on our PS5 essentials list for a very long time.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl

Lots of games have tried to clone Super Smash Brothers to find success. But, we haven’t seen anything like All-Star Brawl before. Game Mill Entertainment has combined the deep roster of Nickelodeon licenses like Spongebob, Avatar, and Ninja Turtles with retro gameplay that is reminiscent of Super Smash Bros. Melee.

This is also as close to the original as one can get without owning a Nintendo Switch and actually buying Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2

Everyone of a certain age will have memories of playing Tony Hawk on their PS1 in their dorm room. (Ok. Might just be me.) This is a well-done remaster of the first two games of the series. It is gorgeously remade and includes some quality of life improvements that will help us share the game with our kids as we remember it (as opposed to how it actually was).

PlayStation Plus/PS Now

Buy here!

Look. The reality of our situation this year is that it might be tough to find games in boxes to wrap up and put under the tree. Gift cards for PlayStation Plus and PS Now should be readily available though. These are “practical” gifts (or at least as practical as anything game-related could be). But, they will be appreciated nonetheless.

Essential PS5 Games

Jeff’s Pick of the Week

As you have probably figured out by now, I am a huge Nintendo fanboy and I always try and buy the latest and greatest (and sometimes not so great) Nintendo titles. This week, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is coming out and I cannot wait to play this game. There is currently a demo on the Nintendo Switch eshop and if you are unsure, I suggest to try it since the save file transfers to the game when you buy it. I have only played the first level, but I cannot wait to play again and have been waiting for the full release to really delve into it. This looks at the story from Breath of the Wild before Ganon took over the world and you get to play as the four champions, Link, Zelda, Impa, and probably a few surprises.

Jeff’s Pick of the Week

Wow! There are a lot of games this week and I could have a whole list of my pick from them compared to last week where I did not even make a pick. I had to go with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales on the PS4 and PS5. The 2018 game was my favorite game from that year (and EFG’s game of the year) and the only platinum trophy I have ever earned. I am so excited to play this game!

In another life, this week would have been E3 2020 at the Los Angeles Convention Centre. The glitz, the hubbub — all of it would be laid out to reveal what to expect from the hotly anticipated fall releases of the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5. Xbox gave us a nibble of third-party games in its previous showcase, y’know, as a treat. Unfortunately, the vast majority of what Xbox put on display was rated M.

But Sony gave us the whole (mostly kid-friendly) meal.

The console’s design, mostly shown standing upright but it will be able to lay flat, while being subject to some rather hilarious memes, is sleek and beautiful in white, black, and blue, reminiscent of Mass Effect’s aesthetic. The new DualShock controller will match. The PlayStation 5’s additional peripherals (not seeing a PlayStation VR headset yet) will also be in white, including controller chargers, a 3D audio headset to take advantage of the PS5’s built-in 3D audio, and a new PlayStation camera.

Sony revealed that there will be two PlayStation 5’s available at launch, one with disc-drive and one without. Microsoft has yet to confirm whether or not an all-digital edition (much like the Xbox One S All Digital) will be available at launch, meaning that Sony’s ahead of the game there.

Sadly, there is no word on pricing for either flavor of the PS5, meaning that we can’t even pre-order the darn thing just yet.

But! It wasn’t just a day for the console’s form factor or how much it may cost at launch. It was also a day about games.

In case you didn’t catch the stream, here’s what we can anticipate for kid-friendly and teen games on PlayStation 5.

For Teens

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

We’re finally seeing Miles Morales firmly taking the reins in the follow-up to 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man. Insomniac’s interpretation of Spidey brought in some serious accolades (and certainly stoked our infinite hype train). Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be coming out this holiday season, although we don’t know if it will be considered a launch title or will be released shortly thereafter.

Miles Morales, the Spider-Man from Earth-1610 in the Marvel Comic Universe, is primed to take over for Peter Parker in the video game space, especially after his exceptional appearance in the much beloved animated film, Into the Spiderverse. We’re looking forward to taking to New York City with Miles’ new powerset at our fingertips.

Note: Sony has clarified that Miles’ new game is a stand alone expansion similar in scope to Uncharted: Lost Legacy.

Horizon: Forbidden West

Believe it or not, Horizon Zero Dawn, released in 2017 on PlayStation 4, is rated T. Yes, Aloy’s treacherous journey through the beautiful tech-infested wilderness, is a T-rated game. Sony revealed today that Aloy’s next adventure, Horizon: Forbidden West, will be coming to PlayStation 5. Aloy will be facing even more arduous challenges in unforgiving terrain. There’s currently no release date for Forbidden West, but if you haven’t had a chance to play Zero Dawn, now is the time. The first game, Horizon Zero Dawn, will be coming to Steam sometime this summer and is currently available on PlayStation 4.

Gran Turismo 7

Gran Turismo has long been a PlayStation staple — much longer than Forza has been the racing game for Xbox. But there hasn’t been a numbered Gran Turismo game since Gran Turismo 6 on the PlayStation 3. (We got Gran Turismo Sport on PlayStation 4.) Gran Turismo 7 appears to be an homage to the most beloved, in this writer’s opinion anyway, entry in the series: Gran Turismo 3, which came out for the PlayStation 2.

Gran Turismo 7 is, much like its predecessors, breathtaking. It’s certainly putting the ray-tracing capabilities of the PlayStation 5 through its paces. As of the June showcase, there is no release date available for Gran Turismo 7

Goodbye Volcano High

Who doesn’t love a coming-of-age story about anthropomorphic dinosaurs? Goodbye Volcano High, a game from Ko_op Mode, is a “cinematic narrative game” and, of course, a love story. And no teen love story is complete without a great soundtrack, which Goodbye Volcano High will have. The game will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Steam in 2021. Want more? Destruction Allstars

Vehicular mayhem sans visceral violence means that Destruction Allstars, from Lucid Games, is likely going to be a T-rated game, even if it’s on the more mature end of the T-range. (We’re looking at you, Final Fantasy VII Remake). With a future-tech Mad Max vibe and Burnout levels of carnage, Destruction Allstars is definitely going on our wishlist as a must-play high-intensity romp.

For Kids

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

We knew that the PlayStation 5 would have to bring us some Ratchet & Clank, but we weren’t sure if it would be a launch title or if we would be getting it somewhere down the line. Well, Insomniac’s beloved anthropomorphic-robot buddy action-adventure platformer doesn’t have a release date yet, but the next installment in the series, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, does look beautiful.

Rift Apart follows in the narrative footsteps of 2016’s Ratchet & Clank, so if you were a little lost on what’s going on with the story, you can pick that game up today on PlayStation 4.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

Sackboy is back! Who knew that we would miss the little guy so much? We’ve been hanging out in Sackboy’s world since 2008’s debut title, LittleBigPlanet, for the PlayStation 3. But this next adventure looks a little different than any of the previous installments in the series — it’s a full 3D platformer now! (Remember that LBP is a mostly 2D side-scrolling platformer.)

Sackboy: A Big Adventure will still allow you to play with up to three of our friends (or family), but we don’t know much more than that at the moment. There is no release date announced as of the conference.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits

There is something so wholesome and welcoming about a lush green forest, magic, and furry puffball friends to keep safe. Kena: Bridge of Spirits is exactly the kind of game that we love to see geared towards kids, too. Kena is a story-driven action-adventure game. According to the developers, Ember Labs, the main protagonist (Kena) needs to “find and grow a team of tiny spirit companions called the Rot, enhancing their abilities and creating new ways to manipulate the environment.”

It’s a breathtaking game that will definitely tug on our collective heartstrings. No release date is available, but we’re crossing our fingers for 2021.

Astro’s Playroom

There is almost nothing we can say about this game, other than Astro’s Playroom is building on the utter adorableness of Astro Bot Rescue Mission, a PlayStation VR game that came out in 2018. Astro’s Playroom trailer is light on gameplay and what the game is actually about, but it definitely got us excited about the return of Astro Bot!

Bugsnax

This is probably one of the weirdest games included in the PlayStation 5 stream, but don’t let that deter you. Bugsnax, from the studio that made Octodad, is achingly cute… albeit odd. Who knew that half-snack, half-animal creatures could cause one woman to squeak in sheer delight? Well, not this writer. Not until after the trailer, anyway.

According to Sony’s blog, Bugsnax is all about investigating the “mysterious Snacktooth Island, home of the legendary half-bug, half-snack creatures.” Bugsnax will be available this holiday season, but it’s unclear as to whether or not it will be a launch title or just within the launch window.
