For the first time in fifteen years, Minecraft has introduced a brand-new tiered weapon: the Spear. The Mounts of Mayhem update for Minecraft, which went live a couple of weeks ago for Java Snapshot and is anticipated for Bedrock “soon”, allows players to be able to deftly wield spears in all material tiers.
Yes, that means that you can start making Netherite spears as soon as you have the materials ready for crafting.
Minecraft reached its 1.0 release in 2011, but hasn’t updated either its tools or its weapons since the hoe was introduced in 2010. Keeping to its original collection of tools and weapons is an odd approach for a game that spans nearly fifteen years, so the spear’s introduction (following its announcement at Minecraft Live in September 2025) is a welcome addition to the game’s relatively condensed repertoire.
There are a few things to keep in mind when you’re looking to forge your first spear and wield it in glorious battle.
Crafting a Spear in Minecraft
It’s a simple recipe, akin to how one might craft an axe or a sword at your handy crafting table: take two sticks, place them in a diagonal line, and add whichever resource you might want to use to change its durability and attack power.
For example, if you did want to craft that Netherite spear (because you’re already in endgame Minecraft), add a Netherite ingot to the top of the two diagonal sticks and boom — Netherite spear! Using a gold ingot would make it a Gold spear, a copper ingot makes it a Copper spear, and so on and so forth. Check out the Minecraft wiki to explore all seven spear tiers, but we’ve listed them below for convenience.
Using a Spear in Minecraft
Spears can be used in both melee (hand-to-hand) and mounted combat. The jab attack is an effective tactic to keep a foe at a distance while fighting on foot, whether that’s in taking out a Creeper or a combatant in PvP. The charge attack is most effective at speed, so it’s best to either get on a mount or run as fast as you can at your opponent before using that attack.
