"Games With Gold"

By: Kate Davis

This is the story of how we introduced our daughter to Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64.

We are a big retro game household with two parents who grew up during the golden age of console games. Our daughter has grown up with every Nintendo system in history. This makes her pretty familiar with the lore behind most of the big Nintendo game franchises. Lately, she’s been wanting to try some of the older games we grew up with. We started her off  with games that had familiar characters and storylines – the old games from the franchises she currently loves on modern systems.

One of the first games she chose to play was Super Smash Bros. on the N64. We have all played Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (commonly referred to as Super Smash Bros. 4), and Project M (a fan-made mod for Smash Bros. Brawl that is played on the Wii) extensively.

We let her play solo on her first run through, so she could explore the game a bit. We tried to reduce her frustration by letting her get used to the controls, the different characters, and graphics while playing against a computer opponent. We also made sure to let her know that when she’s good and ready, she can play against us.

She learned how to use the Nintendo 64 controller pretty well – we use a variety of different controllers in this house (several of them are made by third parties and designed to feel like retro controllers). She liked the slightly different characters to pick from, and felt confident in the controls for the game. Project M helped a lot in this regard. That game  aimed to use the older move-sets and combo. This meant she was already pretty familiar with some of the characters.

She liked seeing the difference in the visuals between the original game on the N64 and the newer ones on the Wii and Wii U. Her first reaction was to laugh a bit at the graphics, but then she said she that it helped her appreciate how good the new games looked. She even thought that the more pixelated Pokémon were “way cuter.”
She was tripped up a bit by the slight difference in controller speed between the Wii/WiiU and the N64. The reactions were just a little bit slower, and she had to more carefully time each move instead of joyfully button smashing like she could with Project M or Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. This was a welcome change because she had to really stop and think about strategy instead of just pressing buttons. She really enjoyed the mini games and training modes, too. Board the Platforms (a mini game) was completely new for her, and she played that again and again for hours.

All in all, she far preferred playing solo against the computer (where she could adjust the difficulty level) over playing against her parents. The delay with the controller left her with an even bigger deficit as far as game play than in the modern games. This was a really fun way for her to play a new game, but it was still something familiar enough to lower her frustration. She’s gone back to play it a few times over the past year, and each time goes right back to those mini games.
So if your kids enjoy the newer Smash Bros. titles – maybe try them on the old game, and start them with solo play and those awesome mini games. Help them get used to the timing and combos, and you’ll have hours of fun together!

The holidays are almost upon us and it is time to start looking for gifts. Thankfully EFG is here to help! Take a look below for some great ideas for video game gifts!

Premium Gaming Service Memberships

PS Plus

Xbox Live Gold

EA Access

These services started as novelties for anyone who didn’t play games online, but they are huge value propositions now. This is mainly because Sony, Microsoft, and EA all distribute games through them at no additional cost.

PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold are on largely equal footing. They both distribute a slate of free games each month that members can “buy” and play for as long as they are members.

EA Access is a bit different though because the free games included in the serve come in two forms. One being timed demos of their upcoming games. The other being access to the EA Vault which includes older games they have released. This service is getting better and better as time passes and more games are added to it. If you have an Xbox One owner on your list that doesn’t buy a lot of games, but has eclectic taste then this should be something to think about.

Independent Games

Some of the best games released this year didn’t come in a box and you won’t find them on store shelves. These games also tend to be cheaper than full retail releases as well. If you are looking for a smaller gift for the little gamer in your life these can be a great option.

Ori and the Blind Forest (Xbox One)

This is one of the most hauntingly beautiful games I played all year. You play as, essentially, a tree spirit as you travel around a magic forest helping protect it from evil. The plot sounds as “blah” as you can get, but it was gorgeous, challenging, and memorable.

Rocket League (PS4)

We’re talking about soccer as played by jet powered cars that can fly. What more do I need to sell this one for you?

Runbow (Wii U)

Runbow_Logo_MultiColour_RGB

If you know someone who owns a Wii U and they regularly have friends over to play this is a must own. Runbow is a 9 player platforming game that will challenge every friendship they have in hilarious ways.

Sports titles

Madden 16, FIFA 16, NHL 16

There really isn’t much to say about these games other than the fact that the Madden, FIFA, and NHL games are the premier game experiences for fans of those sports.

NBA 2k16

Unlike the previously mentioned sports games NBA2K16 includes a cinematic story mode that was directed by Spike Lee. This might seem minor, but it adds a lot to the game. The single player mode is a compelling story about the importance of family and friendship in the face of stardom in the NBA. I enjoyed it a lot.

Transformers because…. Transformers

Transformers: Devastation

I said just about everything I could in my review. But, suffice it to say that this is one of the best Transformers games ever and is will be a guaranteed hit for anyone who loves Transformers (past or present).

You Can’t Stop the Music!

Guitar Hero: Live vs Rock Band 4

A lot of people are going to be looking at the music games this year and will be forced to make a choice between Guitar Hero Live and Rock Band 4 (click the links for reviews of each). Both of them are great games, but Rock Band 4 likely holds the edge if you are buying for someone who regularly plays with friends.

Toys to Life

Skylanders: Superchargers

Unless you have been under a rock, it’s likely that you have heard of Skylanders, the awesome game that brings “toys to life”. The newest installment, Superchargers, brings your favorite skylanders (and some new friends) back with a fleet of drivable vehicles that take to the land, air and sea and bring new life to the franchise. With new levels, new puzzles, new powers and the same old Kaos, Superchargers doesn’t disappoint!

Disney Infinity 3.0

Disney seems to own everything these days and all of that stuff is appearing in their flagship video game: Disney Infinity 3.0. The big focus this year is Star Wars (shocker. I know.) and there are a lot of really cool figures to go along with an interesting game. If your kids LOVE Star Wars then this is a great option.

LEGO Dimensions

What kid doesn’t like to play with LEGOS? I certainly can’t think of one and LEGO Dimensions give these kids the chance to play with their LEGOS inside of a video game. The gameplay is reminiscent of other LEGO games so families who have been playing them will be right at home.

The Nintendo Corner

Splatoon

Splatoon is Nintendo’s family friendly answer to the relentless request for a first person shooter on one of their consoles.  It is an amazingly fun game where you play a squid kid or inkling whose goal is to defeat other players while covering the most turf with ink.   There are many modes of play in this game and it is one of Nintendo’s few games that really integrates usage of the gamepad. This is a family favorite in our house and the variety of play choices have made it so the game does not get old. This may even be EFG’s game of the year.

Super Mario Maker

Have you ever wanted to play infinite levels of a Mario game?  Did you ever want to create your own levels by adding enemies and blocks wherever you choose? Mario Maker allows you to do just that. You use the gamepad to create your own levels and you can play levels that have been shared around the world. This game is very intuitive and easy to use. Even our youngest players can make their own levels.  This was a surprise hit in our family considering how poorly other level building games went over.  This game also has DLC that is continuously keeping it fresh. Another must have on a holiday wish list.

Mario Kart 8

What can we say about this game that hasn’t already been said? Kart racing, our favorite Nintendo characters, and amazing graphics make this a given on any holiday wish list.  There are plenty of new tracks in this game, along with lots of reimagined favorites. This is a great game to play as a family and if you don’t have it already, you should definitely purchase this one!  DLC and updates keep this game fresh. Did we mention that you can race as Link?  On a triforce motorbikes?

There really isn’t any way around it. video games are an expensive hobby to get into. The consoles are all hundreds of dollars each and the games themselves can cost $60 or more! It is no wonder, thanks to prices like that, that parents are nervous to bring consoles into the house. Saving up the money for the console itself isn’t enough because games are coming out constantly.

Fortunately, families who own an Xbox One or a PlayStation 4 have a few services available to them that can bring in a steady stream of games into the house that doesn’t require dropping a paycheck every month.

Xbox Live Gold

Xbox Live was originally designed as the Microsoft multiplayer service. It still serves that purpose today, but it has been expanded to include a suite of free to download games each month. Xbox Live Gold members are given access  one game each for the Xbox One and the Xbox 360 from the 1st to the 15th of each month, and then a second pair of games for the second half of the month. That adds up pretty quickly. Even better? The Xbox 360 games carry value for Xbox One owners because of the impending backwards compatibility update.

It is true that some of the Games with Gold are not family friendly, but it is infrequent that a month will pass by without at least one of the games being fine for families to play.

Xbox Live Gold members also get special discounts on games each week that can add up over time!

The service can be purchased monthly, but it is at its least expensive when it is purchased annually for $59.99 (or ~$45 on Amazon here.).

PlayStation Plus

Xbox Live came first, but PlayStation was the first company to start incentivizing people to purchase the service by giving away free games. They give out multiple games each month for PS4, PS3 and the Vita. Many of these games are available on all three systems are “cross buy” so it is not infrequent that you will be able to get a whole bunch of games

The service is required to enable multiplayer on the PlayStation 4, but this is largely an afterthought once you consider the value added by the instant game collection. Members also get special discounts on games each week that can add up over time!

The service can be purchased monthly, but it is at its least expensive when purchased annually for $49.99.

EA Access

EA Access works differently, but it is still  worth mentioning because it is a subscription gaming service that carries a significant amount of added value for some families. It is a program that is exclusive to the Xbox One that grants the following benefits.

  1. A 10% discount on the digital purchase of EA titles.
  2. The chance to play up to 10 hours of each EA title before it is released.
  3. Access to every game in the EA Vault. This is a list of games that is growing regularly. It includes all of the sports titles from the previous years as well as games like Plants vs Zombies:  Garden Warfare and Peggle 2. This is a value that will only grow with time as more and more games are released.

The service can be purchased monthly, but it is at its least expensive when it is purchased annually for $29.99.

As you can see, these services may seem intrusive, but they pack a huge amount of value.

Take a look below for our list of pirate themed board games to help celebrate International Talk Like a Pirate Day! (Or any time you feel like sailing the seven seas for some pirate-y action!)

Catan: Junior

The Settlers of Catan, now referred to simply as Catan, has been credited with being responsible for the board game boom in recent years. It is certainly a fan favorite of many gaming groups across the world, but it is very difficult in places for the younger set.

Fortunately, Catan Jr. fixes all of that by providing a very similar gameplay experience while eliminating the trading aspects of the game and using a fixed board as opposed to movable tiles. This allows kids to develop and refine their own strategies.

It also doesn’t help that the game is given a pirate theme which is much easier for children to understand and identify with.

Loot

Loot is a card based strategy game where players set sail for adventure and control fleets of pirate ships as they compete to grab the most treasure. It is a simple game that is super inexpensive and packs a lot of punch. We especially like the fact that it includes rules for team play to help broaden the possible game experiences.

Piña Pirata

What happens when you combine the card matching familiarity of Uno with the chaotic, ever shifting rules of Fluxx? Piña Pirata!!

In Piña Pirata, players control a hand of cards containing one or two anthropomorphic pirate-animals. Each card is played into a central pile, with the basic rule being that you must play a card with a pirate-animal that matches one of the ones on the previous card. If you cannot play a card, you draw a new one. The first player to play all their cards wins the round.

The twist? The game starts with two “extra” rules, randomly drawn from a set of tiles. Each round, the winner draws two more tiles and selects one rule to add (the other they keep for scoring). The game continues to get more and more chaotic as rules are added that modify gameplay, give certain cards special powers, and make each game feel different and unique.

Black Fleet

If you want a game that allows you to play the part of pirates, the merchants they raid, and the naval ships that hunt them, all at the same time, look no further than Black Fleet.

Black Fleet is an incredibly family-friendly game of “pick up and deliver”, with a whole bunch of “take that” thrown in. Players use cards from their hand that designate their movement values for three different ships – their large merchant ships, their smaller pirate raiders, and then the neutral Imperial Navy ships. Each player is trying to acquire gold by picking up goods with their merchant and delivering them elsewhere on the board, stealing goods from other player’s merchants with their pirates, and sinking pirates with the Navy ships.

As players acquire gold, they are able to spend it to “buy” one of their unique player powers, and once all their powers are purchased, trigger the end-game condition. These variable player powers can drastically change the strategy that each player may use from one game to the next and lead to tons of replayability in the game.

Walk the Plank

Walk the Plank is a programmed-movement/action-selection game that plays in about 20-30 minutes. Players are trying to shove their opponents meeples down the “plank” and into the water where they will be consumed by a cartoonish sea monster, while simultaneously trying to keep their own group of pirates out of harm’s way.

Players select three action cards from their deck, place them face down, and then go around the table revealing and resolving the actions one at a time (each player resolves card #1 in order, then card #2, etc). Chaotic fun ensues, as players are suddenly not where they intended when their next action comes up, but are still forced to execute on it. This is a fantastic filler game for any game night.

Microsoft held a press conference yesterday at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany that was, with a few exceptions, all about M rated games. Electronic Arts came through today by featuring a bunch of games that were actually worth talking about here on Engaged Family Gaming!

Star Wars Battlefront

The single biggest announcement that EA made was about Star Wars Battlefront. Players around the world have been excited about it, but there is a large portion of that population wanted to see space battles using X-Wings and TIE Fighters. EA finally announced that Star Wars Battlefront will include Fighter Squadron Mode.

Take a look at the trailer above for some details.

Unravel

We talked about Unravel at E3 a few months ago, but EA finally showed us a gameplay video. This game looks absolutely amazing. We cannot wait to play. Yarny continues to be one of our favorite characters recently because he is so adorable. This trailer didn’t change anything about that.

Plants Vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2

Plants Vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 is one of our most anticipated games for next year. The Gamescom trailer revealed a new game mode that takes place on the moon. It also showed off some significant details for three new plant fighters: Rose, Kernel Corn, and Citrod.

Rose appears to a magic using plant that can turn opponents into goats. This could provide some interesting crowd control options for players who like to control the battlefield.

Kernel Corn looks like he is another soldier type character, but it looks like he has some higher damage abilities like air strikes and rocket launchers. We’ll have to see how he is balanced when the game comes out.

Citrod is weird. I don’t have anything else to really say. It does appear, though, that this character has some serious mobility thanks to a rolling move.

It is no surprise that Nintendo has been very successful with its handheld and console hybrid, the Nintendo Switch. In 3 years, the Nintendo Switch has sold almost sixty million units. That puts it as Nintendo’s 7th best-selling console and 3rd best-selling home console when handhelds are taken out of the equation. With the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X come out at the end of this year, people are wondering where that leaves the Nintendo Switch. Will it be left in the dust of these better performing, higher operating systems? Or, will it continue to be the juggernaut that it is. Even though we are quite a few years away from the next Nintendo console being released, here are some ideas I want Nintendo to consider for the Switch or whatever the next console will be.

1. It Still Needs to be a Hybrid Between Handheld and Console

One of the biggest selling points of the Nintendo Switch is that it can be played on a television like any other console, or you can play it as a handheld system. I believe that whatever system Nintendo comes up with in the future must still have this feature. Nintendo’s next console will not be as successful without this feature. I also do not think it will be called the Switch 2. Nintendo has a habit of giving their consoles unique names. The one time they tried to keep the same naming convention for a console (Wii U) it was a complete failure and is the lowest selling Nintendo console of all time.  If Nintendo’s next console does not “switch” between handheld and television play, it will be a huge step back for Nintendo.

2. Better Online Infrastructure

It is no surprise that Nintendo’s online infrastructure is severely lacking. In even some of the simplest games that do not require a lot of extensive action, Nintendo games will still stutter along and dip in framerates. It does not bode well when EVO, one of the largest game tournaments in the world, cancelled the Super Smash Brothers Ultimate tournament because it could not reliably run on Nintendo’s online system. If Nintendo wants to compete against these more powerful systems, it needs to be able to take its games online with better quality and not have all of these hurdles that need to be jumped over. The next Nintendo console needs to allow headset to be used through the controller so that you can talk to your friends while you are playing. It should not require the use of a separate app as a means to talk to each other while playing a game.

Nintendo also needs to not have as many restrictions on their online play. Allow more than one island in Animal Crossing or allow my friends to be able to send more than 3 gifts to me during a day. Also, if my friends and I want to play some Super Smash Brothers online, allow us to put in a couple of computers so we can have a full four-person game going. It was really surprising when Super Mario Maker 2 came out and Nintendo’s original plan involved not being able to play online with your friends. I also do not understand why we still cannot play games like New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe online and can only play them locally.

3. Bring Back the Virtual Console

When the virtual console debuted with the Nintendo Wii, it was a gamechanger for Nintendo consoles at the time. Finally, we would get the chance to play these legacy titles without having to hook up an older system. They were also fairly inexpensive to buy through the Wii’s online store. Most first party games were released through this system and even involved other systems such as the Sega Genesis, Turbografx 16, and Commodore 64. They then proceeded to release the virtual console on Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. For some reason, this all stopped with the Nintendo Switch. They do have the NES and SNES Online, but you must have Nintendo Switch Online in order to play these games. You must also be able to connect to an internet connection every 7 days to continue to use them. The virtual console would give Nintendo the chance to sell the games separately without an online subscription. This would be hard to implement on the Switch currently because a lot of companies went and made their own collections of their games.

4. Achievement/Trophy System

Credit: www.playstationlifestyle.net

It still amazes me that Nintendo has not implemented an achievement or trophy system into any of their consoles. Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam all of trophies or achievements built into their games and I believe that adds a lot of replay value. Most first party Nintendo games will have some sort of achievements already inserted into the game, so why not just add the format into the system as the whole. If a game is a multiplatform game, they already have to come up with trophies and achievements for the other systems and Nintendo already implements them into most of their games, it would not take a lot of work to add them in to whatever Nintendo is planning to do next. I am a huge fan of achievements in games. Whenever the sound or graphic goes across the screen, it gives me the feeling that I accomplished something, and I have to immediately go and check what I achieved.

5. More Perks for Their Online Service

This reasoning coincides perfectly with a better online infrastructure. Currently, you pay $20 to be able to utilize the Nintendo Switch online and their library of NES and SNES games, but it could be so much more. I would love for Nintendo to allow a free game every month like PS Plus or Xbox Games with Gold. The NES and SNES games are great, but I think it overwhelms people when they see how many games there are. If they could tie this in with a possible virtual console so that the developers and publishers get some amount of compensation, it could be a huge success. I doubt that we would ever see Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI on their library of NES and SNES online games. Square Enix may find it more enticing to allow people who join for that month to be able to play the game that is being given away. If Nintendo took the same approach as PlayStation and Xbox, they could easily charge $60 like their competitors. The only problem would be improving their online and adding these perks.

These are just a few of the perks I would like to see added to Nintendo’s next system or even implemented into the Switch’s future. I do not think the Nintendo Switch will struggle with the competition coming out with their more powerful machines. It will continue to be successful due to its portability and unique characters that only Nintendo can bring.

Check out their media briefing on our YouTube Channel!!

Microsoft held their annual Xbox E3 Media Briefing on Sunday June 9th, 2019. The event was an hour and a half long and was widely expected to be a showcase for the next generation of Xbox consoles and to build excited for the brand going into 2020. It fell a little flat in those regards, but there was still plenty of news for parents.

New Xbox is Coming!

Xbox closed their show by sharing some high level details of the next generation Xbox, codenamed Project Scarlett. They stopped short of revealing the official name, the final release date, or the price, but they did share some information about the technical specifications.

Their main focus appeared to be explaining their design philosophies. They explained that they expect the new system to be a significant leap in power over the Xbox One X. They also explained that they will be using a custom SSD (Solid State Drive) that will greatly reduce loading times.

They also revealed that they will be launching the new Xbox alongside HALO Infinite. This will mark the first time that an Xbox has launched with a HALO game since the original Xbox in November 15, 2001.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate

Xbox Game Pass has been a wild success since it was announced last year. There are now over 250 games available on the service. It was only a matter of time, however, before Microsoft expanded on the service. That expansion is now underway.

First, they announced Xbox Game pass for PC. It’s similar to its counterpart on consoles, but it is focused on PC games. It is in Beta now with a special price of $4.99 (The price will increase to $9.99 when the beta ends).

Second, they announced Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, subscription that combines Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Game Pass for PC, and Xbox Games with Gold for $14.99 per month.

Minecraft Dungeons

Minecraft is one of the biggest games on the planet. It is also, largely, impossible to follow up with a sequel.

Microsoft did, however, announce a spin-off title called Minecraft Dungeons last year. It was fully unveiled at this year’s E3 media briefing. Dungeons is a kid friendly take on a Diablo-esque dungeon crawling action game. It will be coming to Xbox (among other consoles and PC) in Spring 2020.

LEGO in Full Force (Or Full For..za?)

LEGO games were well represented during this year’s briefing. They announced LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga and a LEGO Speed Champions expansion to Forza Horizon’s 4.

RPG Time – The Legend of Wright

Xbox spent one minute and thirteen seconds showing us that Nintendo did not have an iron grip on the arts and crafts art style they used on Yoshi and Kirby. The Legend of Wright uses the same console that makes cars in Forza: Horizon 4 come to life, and uses it to animate the pencil sketches of every kid who grew up in the 90’s. We will be keeping an eye on more information as this game gets closer to its 2020 release.

Exciting things happen in the world of gaming every single day. Everything happens so quickly that it can be tough for a parent to keep track of. Between work, carting the kids to everywhere under the sun, cooking, cleaning, and maybe (just maybe) getting a chance to sleep for a few hours parents just don’t have the time to keep up with everything happening in their child’s hobby.

If the above paragraph describes you, then we have an answer for you. EFG will be publishing a digest of some of the biggest gaming news that your family needs to know every Monday night!

A New Wizarding World?

Chucklefish Games, the company who published Stardew Valley, teased their next game this past week and it looks like it will be pretty captivating. The theme is a wizard school that is definitely not based on the Harry Potter universe. Nope. No siree. That would be bad. This one will likely be legally distinct, but have a lot of clever winks and nods to the source material.

We dont have any details yet, but we’re already excited.
